Our "Different by Design" Approach We aren?t a traditional public school. At HLCS, we believe: Movement is Learning: We reject the sedentary classroom model. Our scholars move as they learn, understanding that physical engagement sparks cognitive breakthroughs. The World is Our Classroom: We utilize both structured and unstructured outdoor spaces daily. We are an Expeditionary Learning (EL) school where students engage in long-term, high-stakes projects that solve real-world problems. Process Over Prep: We trade standardized test-prep and rote memorization for initiative and craftsmanship. Students take ownership of their work, producing high-quality projects that reflect genuine mastery rather than a score on a bubble sheet. Collaboration: We deeply value collaboration - both among staff and between staff and students. We know that each person in a classroom brings added knowledge and we do not focus on obedience or hierarchy in our learning community. Restorative Practices: All HLCS Staff are committing to both teaching and using Restorative Practices. This means curiosity over punishment when dealing with student behaviors and when staff have a conflict it means repairing harm by participating in a restorative chat instead of ignoring the issue or talking about a colleague instead of directly to a colleague. Inclusive Learning Community: We are committed to building an inclusive learning community with a strong emphasis on child-centered practices. Instruction is designed to honor each student?s voice, strengths, and individual learning needs while fostering belonging, growth, and academic success. Purpose Statement on Using the Environment We place an intentional emphasis on outdoor learning by using both structured and unstructured outdoor learning spaces. All HLCS Staff will be actively engaged in this emphasis on the outdoors by joining the students as they learn outside. Position Overview The Classroom Teacher, or Crew Leader, is responsible for the successful school experience of every child in their classroom. From academics to social skills, the classroom teacher is responsible for developing each child in a holistic way. Additionally, the classroom teacher is responsible for creating a safe environment where every child feels cared for, supported, and able to thrive. A critical member of the professional culture, the classroom teacher is also responsible for being a positive contributor to the staff team. Job Responsibilities ? Create daily lesson plans that are engaging, educational and exciting ? Deliver lesson plans in a way that catches the attention of the students and keeps them excited about learning ? Differentiate instruction for a variety of ability levels ? Create a classroom with clear routines and procedures Implement positive behavior interventions ? Collaborate with other Staff - including, co-teaching, co-planning, and co-designing expeditions ? Reach school and grade level performance goals ? Partner with families to support student learning ? Develop skills and abilities in trauma-informed teaching strategies ? Implement the EL Education Curriculum with fidelity - including designing service learning projects to coordinate with expeditions ? Actively engage in Professional Development ? Utilize the outdoor environment as a backdrop to learning Required Qualifications ? A valid MN teaching license in an applicable area (or the ability to obtain one) An open mind - to trying new things as a teacher, colleague, and community member ?
