The Austin Public School District is seeking to hire a Full Time 1.0 FTE Family and Consumer Science Teacher effective for the 2026-2027 school year at Austin High School.
APS is a world-class public school system located in Austin, MN. We employ over 800 full- and part-time employees and serve over 5000 students from diverse backgrounds.
Job Summary:
The High School Reading Interventionist provides targeted, evidence-based literacy instruction aligned to Minnesota READ Act requirements for students who demonstrate a need for reading intervention. This role is responsible for delivering district-approved reading interventions, progress monitoring student growth using tools such as Capti ReadBasix and curriculum-based measures (CBMs), and using data systems (e.g., EduClimber) to inform instructional decisions. The Interventionist collaborates with teachers and support staff to improve student literacy outcomes, ensures fidelity of intervention implementation, and supports student movement into and out of intervention services based on data.
Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job:
- Demonstrated understanding of evidence-based reading instruction aligned to the Science of Reading and Minnesota READ Act requirements.
- Knowledge of adolescent literacy development, including foundational reading skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension)
- Ability to implement district-provided reading intervention programs with fidelity
- Strong skills in data collection, analysis, and application, including use of EduClimber and curriculum-based measurement (CBM) data to adjust instruction and improve student outcomes
- Ability to analyze multiple data sources to identify student needs, set goals, and monitor progress over time
- Skill in providing differentiated, small-group, and individualized instruction based on student data
- Understanding of progress monitoring cycles, including decision rules for intensifying, maintaining, or exiting interventions
- Ability to collaborate effectively with general education teachers and EL staff to support a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS)
- Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records of student participation, progress, and outcomes
INTERNAL EXPECTATIONS
Duty/responsibility (90%): Instructional Interventions/Data Collection and Analysis
- Tasks involved in fulfilling above duty/responsibility:
- Determine appropriate reading intervention placement based on Capti ReadBasix data and the curriculum-based reading diagnostic assessment
- Implement district-provided reading intervention programs with fidelity
- Provide targeted, small-group and individualized literacy instruction focused on foundational reading skills (as appropriate for high school learners)
- Use Capti ReadBasix and curriculum-based measures (CBMs) to monitor student progress regularly
- Adjust and intensify intervention in response to ongoing progress monitoring data to accelerate student learning outcomes
- Collect, record, and analyze progress monitoring data (Capti ReadBasix, CBMs) to evaluate student growth
- Use EduClimber and district data systems to track performance, identify trends, and inform instructional decisions
- Monitor student eligibility for exit from intervention services based on data
- Maintain accurate records and submit documentation in compliance with district, state, and READ Act guidelines
Duty/responsibility (10%): Communication and Collaboration
- Tasks involved in fulfilling above duty/responsibility:
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, administration, and support staff to support data-driven instructional planning within an MTSS framework
- Communicate with families regarding program entrance, progress, and exit, including sharing data in a clear and actionable way
- Partner with colleagues (including EL and SPED staff) to ensure alignment of literacy supports across settings
Degree and License Requirements:
- BA or BS (MA preferred)
- K-12 Reading, Academic and Behavioral Strategist, Communication Arts and Literature, or Learning Disabilities license preferred.

Candidates must have or be able to obtain a proper license from the Minnesota Department of Education, have completed a READ Act-approved structured literacy training, or be willing to engage in training during the 2026-2027 school year.
Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job:
Prior successful experience in multicultural education desirable.
Demonstrates continued professional development through course work, research, peer collaboration, and/or job-embedded staff development.
Working knowledge of the subject matter, classroom management techniques, current researched best practices and strategies, as well as students'' learning styles and needs, both academic and affective.
Salary/Benefits: Annual Salary Range is according to education and experience. Also includes a competitive benefits package of paid time off, health insurance, life insurance, etc., according to the AEA Working Agreement located within the Human Resource section of the Austin Public Schools website at www.austin.k12.mn.us.
