Position Overview
The Dean of Students at Owatonna Middle School plays a key role in supporting a positive, student-centered learning environment for all. This position works closely with the Principal and Assistant Principal to provide consistent, proactive support for both students and staff. The Dean focuses on building strong relationships, maintaining a safe and orderly school environment, and ensuring that all students are positioned for success academically and behaviorally.

Owatonna Middle School serves approximately 1,030 students in grades 6–8 and is committed to meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of every learner. Our staff works collaboratively to create a supportive and structured environment where students are known, challenged, and supported. We prioritize relationship-building, high expectations, and continuous improvement in both instruction and school culture.
Key Responsibilities
Student Behavior Support
Support the implementation of the school’s behavior systems and expectations
Respond to and help resolve student behavioral concerns in a fair and consistent manner
Work with students to reflect, restore, and re-engage in learning following behavioral incidents
Collaborate with staff to develop proactive strategies to support student success
Attendance Oversight
Monitor and support student attendance, including follow-up on absences and patterns of concern
Partner with families, counselors, and staff to address attendance barriers
Help implement interventions that improve student engagement and daily attendance
Relationship Building
Build positive, trusting relationships with students, staff, and families
Serve as a visible and approachable presence throughout the school day
Support a school culture grounded in respect, accountability, and belonging
Staff Support
Partner with teachers and support staff to address student needs
Provide guidance and consistency in behavior management practices
Assist with supervision and coverage as needed throughout the school day
Collaboration & Leadership
Work closely with the Principal and Assistant Principal to support overall school operations
Participate in student support teams, PBIS efforts, and other building initiatives
Contribute to ongoing improvement of systems that support student behavior and engagement
Other Duties as Assigned
Assist with supervision during key times (arrival, lunch, dismissal, events)
Support school-wide activities and initiatives
Take on additional responsibilities aligned to student support and school needs
Qualifications
Valid Minnesota teaching license required; administrative licensure preferred, or willingness to obtain
Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with middle school students
Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
Commitment to equitable practices and student-centered decision making
Experience working in a middle school setting preferred
The OMS Dean of Students position is considered a TOSA position and therefore follows the OEA Master Agreement.
Salary:
Based on candidate''s education and experience per the OEA Master Agreement.
