Director of School Nutrition (0.5 FTE)
Location: Lakes International Language Academy
Schedule: 11 months (21 unscheduled days per fiscal year, coordinated with supervisor)
Annual Salary: $20,000 – $30,000
Position Overview
Lakes International Language Academy is seeking a Director of School Nutrition to oversee and manage all aspects of the school''s nutrition program across multiple sites. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and local Child Nutrition Program requirements while supporting the nutritional and educational needs of students.
This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage cyclical, compliance-driven work with seasonal peak demands.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Oversight
- Oversee daily operations of the School Food Authority (SFA) across all sites
- Lead planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the nutrition program
- Serve as Head of the Health and Wellness Program
- Collaborate with the Food Service Management Company (FSMC) to ensure effective operations
- Advocate for the school''s interests and maintain strong vendor accountability
Compliance & Regulatory Management
- Ensure full compliance with USDA, state, and local requirements
- Coordinate Administrative (Site) Reviews every five years, including documentation and on-site coordination
- Manage annual requirements, including:
- Direct Certification and family notifications
- Free & Reduced meal application processing and eligibility determinations
- Verification process and state reporting
- Self-Inspection Review (due February)
- State SFA visits and responses
- Food and Beverage License renewal
- Annual surveys and required documentation submissions
- School Nutrition Program application (CLICS2)
- Oversee FSMC contract renewal or Request for Proposal (RFP) process as required
Monitoring & Reporting
- Conduct regular site visits to ensure compliance with program requirements and SOPs
- Monitor Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) compliance
- Review and reconcile monthly claims, billing, and budgets
- Maintain accurate records and reporting in systems such as CLICS2 and EduTrak
Operational Responsibilities
- Process Direct Certification and eligibility updates twice monthly
- Review applications and determine eligibility on an ongoing basis
- Monitor daily meal counts and reporting accuracy
- Coordinate equipment needs, replacements, and supply ordering
- Ensure completion and posting of required health inspections
Communication & Support
- Communicate with families regarding eligibility, benefits, and program updates
- Respond to parent and staff inquiries
- Support students with allergies and special dietary needs
- Assist with negative meal balances and related concerns
- Provide training and guidance to staff
Events & Additional Duties
- Coordinate food service for school events, including:
- PTO dinners, conferences, and family events
- Cultural events, concerts, and fundraisers
- Concessions and school activities
- Support inventory, staffing coverage, and operational needs as needed
- Collaborate with local agencies on facility or kitchen updates
Work Schedule & Environment
This position averages 0.5 FTE, with workload fluctuations throughout the year.
Peak periods include:
- July–August (enrollment, certifications, application processing)
- February (inspections and reviews)
- Mid-month reporting cycles
Qualifications
- Experience in school nutrition programs, food service management, or related field preferred
- Knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Programs and compliance requirements preferred
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and detailed processes
- Effective communication skills with diverse stakeholders
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Physical Requirements
- Ability to move between multiple school sites and kitchen areas
- Frequent standing and walking during site visits and inspections
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (occasionally up to 50 pounds)
- Ability to access and inspect kitchen equipment, storage areas, and serving lines
- Ability to use a computer for extended periods, including data entry and reporting
- Occasional bending, reaching, and lifting in food service environments
