Middle Level General Education Teacher Job Description

Purpose Statement on Using the Environment
An emphasis on outdoor learning by using the environment with which we live and learn by utilizing both structured and unstructured outdoor learning spaces; we intend to be an expeditionary learning school where students work together on a specific project throughout the school year to achieve a common goal. HLCS will be a smaller community school with smaller class sizes which will lead to more individualized attention and care.

Position Overview
The classroom teacher is responsible for the successful school experience of every child in their classroom. From academics to social skills, the classroom teacher is responsible for developing each child in a holistic way. Additionally, the classroom teacher is responsible for creating a safe environment where every child feels cared for, supported, and able to thrive. A critical member of the professional culture, the classroom teacher is also responsible for being a positive contributor to the staff team.
The Middle Level Teacher will provide engaging, developmentally responsive instruction for students in grades 5-8 while fostering academic growth, critical thinking, collaboration, and social-emotional development. Teachers will utilize experiential and outdoor learning opportunities to create meaningful and authentic learning experiences for scholars.
Core Job Responsibilities
Curriculum & Expeditionary Design
Design and implement daily lessons rooted in the EL Education curriculum, ensuring they are "discovery-based" and lead students toward a final, high-quality product.
Treat the outdoors as a vital extension of the classroom, regularly utilizing the natural environment to ground abstract concepts in tangible, experiential contexts.
Develop Learning Expeditions that foster interdisciplinary connections, encouraging students to see how math, literacy, and science intersect in the real world.
Engaging Instructional Practice
Employ high-leverage EL engagement strategies (e.g., protocols, Socratic Seminars, and workshops) to ensure students are active participants rather than passive listeners.
Differentiate instruction to honor diverse learning styles, ensuring that every student is met with the appropriate level of challenge to meet our high academic standards.
Provide targeted Tier 2 interventions by closely monitoring student progress and facilitating small-group support to bridge learning gaps.
Assessment & High-Quality Work
Facilitate the creation of authentic assessments where students demonstrate mastery through craftsmanship, revision, and public presentation to a real-world audience.
Guide students in the "critique and revision" process to foster a culture of producing high-quality work that they take pride in.
Social-Emotional Learning & Belonging
Cultivate a deep sense of belonging by integrating SEL and character education into the daily fabric of the classroom through Crew and trauma-informed practices.
Implement positive behavior interventions that prioritize restorative justice and emotional safety, ensuring the classroom remains a brave space for all.
Partner with families as essential collaborators to strengthen the school culture and support the "whole child" beyond the school walls.

Actively co-teach, co-plan, and co-reflect with colleagues, embodying the spirit that we are all crew, not passengers.
Commit to ongoing EL Education professional learning, consistently seeking to refine your craft and meet grade-level performance goals through a lens of continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
● Valid Minnesota teaching license or the ability to obtain licensure in one or more of the following areas:
○ Communication Arts and Literature 5-12
○ Mathematics 5-12
○ Social Studies 5-12
○ Science 5-8
● Prior classroom experience desired
● Demonstrating unwavering belief in the potential and abilities of every student
