Start Your Online Application Now Date Closing: 10/21/2026 Position Title: Grounds Worker/Custodian Department: Bargaining Unit: Building & Maintenance Custodial Immediate Supervisor''s Position Title: Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds Director of Food & Nutrition Services FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Summary: Under the direction of the Supervisor of Buildings nad Grounds, the Grounds Worker/Custodian is responsible for maintaining facility grounds, athletic fields, and parking lots. Duties and responsibilities include removing and plowing snow and ice; caring for district lawns; preparing, setting up, marking and maintaining athletic fields and stadium for sporting events; and performing preventive maintenance on grounds equipment. Under the direction of the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds and guidance of the Lead Custodian, the Grounds Worker/Custodian is responsible for performing general cleaning within assigned areas, hallways, restrooms, gyms, locker rooms, cafeterias, and school areas in accordance with cleaning schedules and work assignments in providing a safe, clean learning environment for students, staff, and faculty. The Grounds Worker/Custodian may assist in the setup and tear downs in preparation for building events, evening activities or classes within the building. COMPENSATION/BENEFITS: $24.10 per hour + potential licensure pay per 2024-2026 Master Agreement This position does qualify for benefits please see the 2024-2026 Master Agreement SECTION II: ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Conducts lawn maintenance and care activities for all district grounds. Maintain school grounds including mowing, trimming around buildings, collecting and disposing of refuse, watering and landscaping. Operates mowers, trimmers, bush cutters, chain saws, trucks, tractors, skid loaders, blowers and other grounds equipment. Mows and trims grass around building, fields and lawns. Collects and disposes of ground refuse. Prunes, trims, and plants trees and shrubs. Maintains, cares for and prepares athletic field for sporting events. Performs turf and lawn care. Lays out, marks and paints athletic fields (i.e. baseball, football, track, soccer, etc.) for scheduled events, practices and games. Maintains benches, fences, and bleachers. Grooms fields, when appropriate. Cleans up after games. Performs and conducts snow removal for all district facilities and lots. Removes snow and ice from sidewalks, parking lots, drive ways and around buildings of the district. Applies sand and salt to all areas to protect the safety of faculty, students and then public. Operates blowers and large snow removal equipment and loaders in snow removal. Conducts routine and general maintenance to grounds equipment and tools. Provides assistance to food service department with delivery of food and other products in a safe and timely manner. Deliver inner school mail and copy orders, take money deposits to proper bank. Ensure delivery vehicle can be operated safely including checking that all running lights are operable, tires are in good condition, and fluid levels are at recommended levels. Custodial/maintenance projects with the buildings, as needed. Sanitizes and cleans restrooms in accordance with assignments and cleaning schedules. Scrubs and sanitizes sinks, countertops, door handles, faucets, toilet flush handles, soap, and paper dispenser handles. Cleans, polishes and rinses chrome fixtures. Cleans and sanitizes toilet stools and urinals and makes sure they are operating properly. Cleans mirrors and window ledges. Scrubs and sanitizes restroom floors. Refills paper goods, soap dispensers and sprays deodorizers. Provides cleaning services for classrooms, offices, cafeteria, kitchens, hallways, locker rooms, gymnasium, and all areas required in school building. Sweeps, vacuums or mops floors and hallways daily. Cleans hallways, entryways, restrooms, locker rooms, classrooms or cafeteria. Dust mops or wet mops rooms and floors and classrooms, as necessary. Empties waste baskets and recycle baskets. Scrubs soap and towel dispensers, countertops and walls. Collects trash including milk cartons and cleans milk carton bins. Sanitizes countertops, sink, chairs, and desks. Cleans glass windows on doors daily. Cleans gymnasium(s). Vacuums carpets and entry mats. Cleans and disinfects spills and stains as required. Cleans hallways, entryways, restrooms, locker rooms, classrooms or cafeteria. Strips, mops, waxes, buffs and cleans floors. Assists with the set up and take down of equipment and materials needed for scheduling building activities, meetings, events or functions within the building. Provides assistance in unloading deliveries and/or food items to the building and in moving desks, furniture, and equipment within the building, as assigned. Sets up tables and chairs for breakfast and lunch. Checks and fills milk coolers. Cleans tables, floors and stores tables/chairs after breakfast meal times. Use computer to check emails and respond in an appropriate timeframe. Assists the building lead in monitoring boiler operations, if needed. Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required. SECTION III: WORK REQUIREMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENT: Minimum education required to perform adequately in position could reasonably be attained only by completing the following: REQUIRED EDUCATION/TRAINING (choose one) DEGREE INFORMATION: Type of degree: (B.S., M.A., etc.) less than high school diploma x High school diploma or GED. Major field of study or degree emphasis: 1 year college 2 years college 3 years college 4 years college 1st year graduate level Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job: Knowledge of requirements of the fundamentals of landscaping, tree care, lawn/turf care and general ground facilities (parking lots, buildings, etc.). Knowledge of all safety precautions and risk management procedures and proper lifting mechanics. Knowledge of the application, use and proper storage of all chemicals used in performance of the job. Knowledge of cleaning techniques and materials. Knowledge of floor and carpet care. Knowledge of tools, equipment, machines and materials used in maintaining grounds and outside facilities. Preventive maintenance practices and procedures for tools, equipment and machinery. Knowledge of district safety procedures and requirements in the operation of large machinery, powered equipment, mowers, chemicals, etc. 2nd year graduate level Doctorate level Required Work Experience in Addition to Formal Education/Training: Minimum of 1 years grounds, custodial or maintenance experience. LICENSE/ CERTIFICATION ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE WORK Skilled in: Operating and maintaining all equipment associated with grounds maintenance, snow removal, tractors and accessories. Laying out, marking and maintaining athletic fields. Conducting routine preventive maintenance to grounds equipment, machinery and tools. Operating mowers and sprayers. Reading and understanding documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Applying basic mathematics in determining areas, quantities, adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying units of measure. Following assigned cleaning schedules and assignments in accordance with department standards and requirements. Using tools, chemicals and cleaning equipment. Communicating and cooperating with district staff, supervisors, building administrators, and other district employees.
