POSITION: SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR – (FTE 1.0)
LOCATION(S): DISTRICT-WIDE
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, the Special Education Coordinator provides due process, instructional and program support for special education programs and related services for students with disabilities to ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations. Individuals successful in this role are extremely ethical, well-organized, highly confidential, exhibit initiative, are creative problem solvers, and demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of this position may change from time to time. MTCS reserves the right to add or delete duties and responsibilities at the discretion of MTCS and its Directors. This job description is intended to describe the general level of work being performed. It is not intended to be all-inclusive.
Hours:
M-F, school hours
Additional hours as needed to fulfill duties of this position including Extended School Year
Salary Range:
$78,400 up to $90,000

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb steps, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be willing to be trained in and use de-escalation/restraint techniques for managing crisis situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists department and MTCS leadership with monitoring compliance with special education due process requirements; staff caseloads; paraprofessional assignments; continuum of services; child find; child count; and program planning
- Coordinates contracted services within assigned programs
- Manages the completion of Uniform Tuition Billing, Third Party Billing, and departmental asset management
- Coordinates child study and IEP meetings
- Manages the oversight of due process timelines and records
- Provides due process assistance and guidance to special education teachers
- Coaching and modeling to support implementation of academic and social/emotional/behavioral strategies
- Facilitates department meetings
- Assists building administrators with paraprofessional and teacher evaluations
- Supports and lead continuous improvement efforts at the school and organizational level
- Promotes and exudes positive climate, establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships to facilitate a culturally proficient school system
- Communicates effectively verbally, and in writing; in person, and online, with parents, school staff and representatives of outside agencies and organizations on special education topics
- Facilitates formal and informal dispute resolution through training, coaching, and direct participation in the dispute resolution process
- Assists the Director of Special Education in analyzing, developing and modifying special education programs to meet the needs of students
- Represents the district on interagency councils
- Other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned
- A valid MN special education teaching or related service provider license; minimum 5 years experience in special education with 2 years of leadership experience
- Thorough knowledge of state and federal special education issues, changes in federal and state law as well as case law, and educational research based instructional practices
- Valid MN driver’s license without restrictions
- Extraordinary interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with others, be polite, helpful, courteous and compassionate
- Exceptional communication skills; verbally, non-verbally, and in writing
- Highly developed conflict resolution, problem analysis, data collection, and problem solving skills
- Team player and positive professional demeanor
- Ability to follow directives from supervisors
- Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to make decisions and act within MTCS and program policies, procedures and guidelines
