Position Summary
The Principal serves as the instructional leader of Gateway STEM Academy and has primary responsibility for leading the academic program and ensuring strong classroom instruction to achieve the goals outlined in the School Improvement/CACR Plan and the school''s authorizer contract. The Principal works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Instructional Coach, teachers, and school improvement partners to advance student achievement and continuous improvement. The Principal reports directly to and is evaluated by the Executive Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
• Lead the academic program and ensure curriculum, instruction, assessment, and intervention systems are aligned with the school''s mission, School Improvement/CACR Plan, and authorizer performance goals.
• Establish and communicate clear expectations for effective instruction, including lesson design, purposeful use of instructional time, student engagement, and rigorous, standards-aligned teaching.
• Use student achievement, growth, classroom, and perception data to identify strengths, address gaps, and guide instructional decisions.
• Establish academic systems, schedules, intervention structures, and data-review routines that support student achievement and implementation of school priorities. School Improvement and Accountability
• Lead building-level implementation, monitoring, and adjustment of the School Improvement/CACR Plan and academic action steps tied to authorizer goals.
• Monitor progress toward academic performance targets and ensure implementation fidelity.
• Work closely with school consultants and external partners focused on school improvement initiatives.
Instructional Coach Supervision
• Directly supervise and evaluate the Instructional Coach.
• Establish clear expectations for coaching schedules, classroom observation frequency, teacher follow-through, and support activities.
• Regularly review coaching logs, observation records, and feedback cycles.
• Hold the Instructional Coach accountable for providing focused, consistent, and high quality support aligned with school improvement priorities and the School Improvement/CACR Plan.
Staff Supervision and Professional Development
• Supervise and evaluate teachers and instructional support staff.
• Implement and monitor the teacher evaluation process in accordance with Minnesota requirements and the locally adopted evaluation rubric.
• Ensure teachers receive ongoing, job-embedded professional development aligned with Minnesota statutory and rule-based teacher competencies, school improvement priorities, and academic performance goals.
• Provide coaching, feedback, and professional learning opportunities that strengthen instructional practice and improve student outcomes. School Climate and Culture
• Maintain high expectations for teaching, learning, professionalism, and accountability.
• Support a positive school climate that promotes academic growth, consistency, collaboration, and student success. Professional Growth
• Diligently participate in a school-approved, job-embedded professional development plan aligned with Minnesota Administrator Competencies.
• Engage in continuous leadership development to strengthen instructional leadership and school effectiveness.
• Additional Duties: The duties listed in this posting reflect the Board-approved Principal Job Description. Additional duties may be assigned by the Executive Director consistent with the scope of the position.
Required Qualifications
Education and Licensure
• Master''s Degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, Curriculum and Instruction, or a related field.
• Valid Minnesota K–12 Principal License required.
• Current Minnesota teaching license preferred.
• Eligibility to work in the United States. Experience • Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
• Minimum of two (2) years of instructional leadership, coaching, administrative, or supervisory experience preferred.
• Experience leading school improvement initiatives and improving student achievement.
• Experience working with diverse student populations is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Strong understanding of curriculum, instruction, assessment, intervention, and school improvement practices.
• Knowledge of Minnesota Academic Standards, accountability systems, and educator evaluation requirements.
• Ability to analyze and use multiple sources of data to drive instructional improvement.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to build collaborative relationships and maintain a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement.
• Demonstrated leadership in fostering a positive school culture and improving instructional effectiveness.
• Knowledge of special education, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and student intervention frameworks preferred.
