Assists in the implementation of instructional programs including supporting activities of daily living, behavior management, re-teaching academic skills, and other related duties as required or assigned. Essential Functions &#9679; The duties of the Special Education Assistant may vary based upon specific assignment. Duties may also change at any time based upon administration or teacher reexamination of student or program need. * Regular and prompt attendance is essential; * Carry out the instructional programs and lessons as developed by the licensed staff in all learning environments and provide the special education teacher/staff with information about general education assignments, activities and student participation and behavior; * Interact with students according to their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP); * Individually or in small groups, reinforce concepts and skills, provide guided practice, use supplemental teaching strategies and other instructionally relevant activities as directed by the teacher; * Implement accommodations as indicated by the IEP and as directed by the special education teacher; * Observe student behavior and implement de-escalation techniques, re-direct behavior, and support classroom management to promote a safe learning environment; * Monitor student behavior before and after the school day, during transition time between classes, free time, study periods and other times as assigned; * Assist the student(s) in using age-appropriate self-management skills including problem solving, decision making, communication, conflict resolution, anger management, social skills, recreational skills and similar; * Assist the special education teacher(s) and staff with clerical tasks: correcting student work, material or room preparation, equipment maintenance, collecting and documenting student data and similar as directed by the special education teacher; * With proper certification and training, implement Crisis Prevention Intervention techniques including de-escalation, transport, physical intervention and/or seclusion; * Follow all school policies and procedures; * Performs other duties as assigned. Position Requirements &#9679; First Aid / CPR certification or ability to acquire * Bilingual in Spanish and English * Knowledge of basic math, reading, language and science concepts pertinent to the area of assignment; * Knowledge of child development fundamentals and concepts; * Ability to demonstrate confidentiality; * Ability to physically restrain a student with the help of others if a student&#8217;s behavior escalates to a potentially dangerous level; * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and adults; * Ability to handle everyday recurring basic assignments and problems; * Ability to read, interpret and collect basic workplace data; * Ability to communicate effectively professionally both orally and in writing; * Ability to use modern office equipment, technology, and related software.
