Job Summary
The Department of Corrections is looking to hire a part time Special Teacher for our Red Wing Facility. This position will be expected to work 20 hours per week during the afternoons. The Special Teacher exists to:
- Provide literacy, English Language Learning, secondary credential, post-secondary preparation, and/or other adult basic education (ABE) instruction in a well-managed and comprehensive instructional environment to support offender Personal Education Plans
- Develop and use curriculum based on state ABE standards, and integrate methods of instruction - to include whole class, small group, and individual instruction - to serve all types of learners and learning styles.
- Assess, monitor, and record offender progress and to direct teaching assistants and offender tutors to promote effective offender learning.
This position will have direct contact with incarcerated students.
Minimum Qualifications
To be qualified for and considered for this position, applicants must meet all of the minimum qualifications listed below. Ensure that your resume contains descriptions of your work experiences sufficient for comparison against the requirements stated below and indicate the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
AND
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Professional Minnesota teaching license.

Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are strongly desired of applicants seeking consideration for this position:
- Possession of a current Minnesota Tier 3 or 4 teaching license.
- Experience working in an education setting.
- Experience working in a correctional setting.
- Experience teaching Adult Basic Education.
- Teaching experience as a licensed teacher.
Physical Requirements

Additional Requirements
The selection process may include screening the top candidate(s) on their criminal history, predatory offender registration, offender associations and/or other applicable background information in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check which includes successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements of law enforcement jurisdictions, including probation.
Employment history/reference checks, including incidents of sexual harassment, will also be conducted on the top candidate(s) in accordance with Department of Corrections’ policy. This may include a review of job performance and discipline records.
New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
