Physical Education: Bug O Nay Ge Shig School - Bena, MN

The Bug O Nay Ge Shig School is located on the Leech Lake Reservation near Cass Lake, MN and within the Chippewa National Forest. The mission of the school is &#8220;to provide students with foundations of Anishinaabe language and teachings; to integrate education with the lifeways of the Leech Lake Ojibwe Community; and to enhance their lifelong learning for post-secondary education.&#8221; The school serves a vast geographic region and has a student body of approximately 200 students in grades K-12. The school focuses on Ojibwe Language and Culture as well as a curriculum based on state standards. All students take Ojibwe Language and Culture courses as well as the four subjects of Math, Social Studies, Science and English. Another very important component of the school is the Niigaane program, which is an Ojibwe Language Immersion program for students in grades K-6. The Bug O Nay Ge Shig School is a Tribally-Controlled Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) School and is funded through federal, state and local sources, including the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. The 2024-25 school year will be a very exciting time to join the team of educators at the Bug O Nay Ge Shig School! Class sizes are kept intentionally small, there is a high priority placed upon building strong, formative relationships with students, and the setting of the school provides for a rich learning environment including modern technology resources as well as all of the opportunities that come with being in the heart of a national forest. School seasonal activities such as harvesting wild rice and maple tree sap are prioritized alongside mathematics and reading.
