Description:
The Hopkins EL Program offers English instruction to students whose primary language is not English. The principal duty of the EL teacher is to instruct students in English and help them acquire language skills to function meaningfully throughout the day. The EL teacher is also expected to:
* Test and assess students' English skills to determine placement and/or exit from service
* Assist in scheduling EL classes
* Maintain student files and record relevant information onto the district database
* Provide progress reports and/or grades to parents and mainstream staff
* Address the needs of EL students with various language capabilities
* Teach students in small and large group settings
* Meet and communicate with parents and mainstream staff
* Gather students' background information and family data
* Participate in parent-teacher conferences
* Serve as an advocate for ELs by representing their needs to parents, mainstream staff, program coordinators, and administrators
* Serve as a resource in areas related to the education of ELs for administration, mainstream staff, parents and students
Qualifications:
Qualified applicants will have completed the K-12 EL license requirements for certification. Applicants will have a variety of recent experiences with non-English speaking students in a US and/or an international setting. Applicants will have experience with and be able to demonstrate the following:
* Knowledge of and expertise in the field of Second Language Acquisition to serve as a resource for administrators, mainstream staff, students, and parents
* Knowledge of and experience with EL curriculum
* The ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students, parents, and staff
* The capability to adapt instruction to various learning levels and styles
* Effective classroom management and organizational skills
* Prior experience in advocacy for non-English speaking students and families
* The ability to work in a cooperatively with other EL staff members
* The desire and ability to work independently within the framework of a school setting with administrators, mainstream teachers, resource staff, students, and parents
* Knowledge and experience with newcomers and students with limited formal schooling is strongly recommended
