Description:
Job Title: EL Coordinator
Level: All Grades - 1st - 12th
Classification: 0.4 FTE (Current program - Program size scale included below)
Benefits Eligible: Depends on overall FTE - Benefits available over 30 hours a week
Compensation: Commensurate with experience
Licensure or Certification: Preferred Licensure Area(s): English as Second Language
Reports to: Director of Student Services
Starting Date: Fall 2024
General Job Description:
The English Language Learner (ELL) program in District 4105 supports learners in acquiring the English needed to succeed in the classroom, in accordance with the State of Minnesota Guidelines and English Language Proficiency Standards. Instruction in speaking, listening, reading, and writing is provided by licensed ELL instructors for students whose first language is not American English. Paraeducators and specially trained teachers also support classroom instruction for ELL students.
The EL Coordinator position scope is predicated on total program enrollment and size. Historically, the program has had between 15 and 20 students. Enrollment is determined by fall screening and schedules are established subsequently. The EL Coordinator position is generally combined with another role at Great River School, with priority toward the flexibility needed in the EL Program for growing enrollment potential and the fluctuations of testing season.
Hours: 8:00 - 4:00 during school days, with some meetings extending past 4:00. One 25 minute lunch break during the day.
Primary Work Strands:
The work strands for the EL Coordinator are articulated in detail in the GRS ELL Plan of Service, and are summarized below
Initial Screening and Parent Notification
Screen all new students based on Family Language Questionnaire and prior school records
Screening will take place during the first 30 days of the school year using the WIDA screener
Use our rubric to determine whether a student qualifies for service per their WIDA score
Use the template parent notification form to alert parents to WIDAs outcomes and whether the student will be offered EL Program services.
English Learner Programs
Once WIDA testing is complete and a roster is established, the EL program is established for the year
The EL Coordinator works in collaboration with the Director of Student Services and Program Director to establish a schedule for students to work with the EL program, including whether they should plan to work individually or in small groups
During the course of the school year, deliver EL support and services to students in coordination and collaboration with classroom guides.
Annual Testing
All students who qualified for EL services will take the ACCESS 2.0 for ELLs test in the winter testing window - generally February and March
Test scores will be indicated on school records and used to update EL program services
Students demonstrating sufficient progress may be exited from the program
EL Documentation and Communication
The EL Coordinator will maintain an annual roster that includes
Students taking the WIDA test
Students/families declining services
Students enrolled in the EL program
The EL Coordinator will communicate enrollment to the MARSS Coordinator for reporting
Update the Vault to indicate students receiving EL services
Update family following any changes to the intervention
The EL Teacher will regularly meet and collaborate with the classroom teachers of the EL students.
Behavior Support
Along with all faculty members, the EL Coordinator is responsible for upholding school and level norms with students
Behavior Tiers
For addressed tier behaviors, the Interventionist uses Restitution practices to follow up with the student
Tracked behaviors are also addressed with the student, and also documented on paper in the elementary office
For bottom line behaviors, the Interventionist walkies for additional support
Program size determination
Great River will establish the size of the EL Program and subsequently the necessary FTE required to support the program. This is projected every spring after we complete ACCESS testing and survey families to determine who plans to return. The EL program is re-adjusted after the fall WIDA testing to ensure the Coordinator has adequate time to run the EL program. Scheduling is done in coordination with the EL Coordinator, Director of Student Services, Program Directors and other individuals as needed on the Leadership team.
