Position:
Lead Teacher - Special Education
Reports to:
Executive Director and Assistant Director of Special Education
Qualifications:
* Active licensure in special education
* Multiple special education licenses – ASD and DCD minimally
* At least 5 years’ experience teaching in special education – preferably across grade levels
* Specialty areas for specialized instruction: examples: assistive technology; social thinking; alternative reading and math instruction, functional skills
* Demonstrated proficiency in core aspects of special education service delivery such as writing IEPs and conducting special education evaluations
Overview:
Partner with the special education administration to support teachers in program and curriculum implementation and new teacher mentorship.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
* Knowledge of special education due process procedures
* Knowledge research-based instructional practices, application to a wide range of disabilities, and the ability to convey that information to licensed and non-licensed staff
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of groups and individuals
* Ability to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously
* Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written forms with parents, staff, and students
* Flexibility and problem-solving skills are essential
Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide mentorship to new and alternatively licensed teachers.
* Assist with paraprofessional observations and evaluations.
* Participate in the program planning process.
* Assist with implementation of new program initiatives (e.g., new curriculum, new focus area), this includes observation and implementing/monitoring steps for implementation and success.
* Partner with new and alternatively licensed teachers to write IEPs and assist with reviewing all IEPs for technical compliance and programming integrity before they are sent to parents.
* Assist with professional development plans for each year and provide professional development in areas of expertise.
* Assist with new paraprofessional on-boarding, including some training and overviews of student needs.
* Plan and provide (when appropriate) monthly paraprofessional professional development sessions.
* Assist in reviewing the IEPs/evaluations of incoming students to identify needs and work with the assigned special education teacher to plan their programming at Cologne Academy.
* Continue to teach specific skills in area of expertise as needed (eg. Social thinking) with the potential for maintaining a select caseload of students who have highly specialized needs.
* Conduct ASD portions of evaluations and conduct other portions of evaluation for alternatively license special education teachers.
Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
