Much of the work of a Special Education Paraprofessional consists of direct and indirect service to individuals identified with Paraprofessional support needs in the Individual Education Program (IEP) plan process. The Special Education Paraprofessional is employed at-will and operates as a professional within the guidelines established by Nova Classical Academy. In cooperation with Nova Classical staff and volunteers, the Special Education Paraprofessional works to fulfill the school&#8217;s mission in the following areas of responsibility: AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY * Provide behavior and academic support for students as directed by teacher/case manager related to IEP goals, objectives, and behavioral plans * Supervise students during non-instructional times (e.g. lunch, recess, field trips, and other activities), including escorting and assisting students to and from class(es) * Adapt instructional materials, equipment, and/or strategies as directed to accomplish the instructional objectives and meet student needs * Reinforce instructional material(s), working with students on assignments, providing supplemental tutoring, guided practice, and other instructionally-relevant activities as directed by teacher/case manager * Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as indicated in the student&#8217;s IEP or other formal supports as needed throughout the academic day * Collaborate and provide academic and behavior data regarding, but not limited to, student progress, observations, needs, issues, behaviors * Participate and/or provide input for student-related meetings as requested * Foster a love of learning and passion for knowledge * Encourage and engage students in their individual education path * Attendance at required training, meetings, and maintenance of district-required certification(s) * Adherence to Nova policies, procedures, and the principles of classical education * Other duties as assigned REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * Associate&#8217;s degree; two years of study at a higher education institution (at least 60 semester credits); Voluntary Paraprofessional Credential in accordance with Minnesota Rule 8710.9000; or, a passing score of 460 or higher on the ParaPro Exam * One (1) or more years&#8217; experience working with students in one-on-one, small group, and/or classroom setting * Current Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) and/or First Aid/CPR/AED certification(s) and/or willingness to obtain * Ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to student and other information as required by FERPA * Aptitude for work with students at various grade and development levels * Committed to professional and technical development through attendance at development activities, scheduled meetings, and relevant training DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS * Bachelor&#8217;s or other advanced degree * Current or previous experience working in a classical education environment * Experience as an Educational Assistant, Paraprofessional, or Para Educator * Current or previous experience working with special education PHYSICAL DEMANDS * Duties are generally performed in a classroom and/or resource room setting, indoors and/or outdoors, where some environmental hazards and/or risks may be present * Frequent lifting up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting up to 40 pounds * Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects in the performance of the job * Must be able to remain in a stationary position and/or walk for periods of one hour or more * Occasional or frequent standing for periods of 4 hours or more * Regular stooping, squatting, kneeling, reaching, bending, walking, or a combination of these * Exposure to various disagreeable conditions which may involve, but are not limited to, human/student contact, verbal outbursts, physical aggression, exposure to bodily fluids * Occasional/regular work outdoors in all weather conditions * Must be able to exchange accurate information to students, teachers, parents, and staff * Regular operation of computer or other office machines JOB SUMMARY The primary role of the Special Education Paraprofessional is to enhance the learning environment for students by providing effective, personalized attention; engaging in appropriate instructional and behavioral support; and, modeling intellectual and principled living by demonstrating character and intellectual virtues in accordance with Nova Classical Academy&#8217;s classical education tradition.
