Approximately 30% of NLA&#8217;s students receive special education, the majority receive services in federal Setting I and II. The special education teacher is responsible for maintaining a classroom environment where students can thrive, and for being part of a collaborative team of general and special educators, administrators, and support staff. NLA&#8217;s special educators can focus on providing quality services to small caseloads and collaborating with general educators because they are supported by a robust team of experienced colleagues, including an evaluation team and on-site special education administration. NLA is a K-12 charter school located in Forest Lake, Minnesota, a community about 25 miles north of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The school was organized by a group of Forest Lake area parents and teachers seeking an alternative to the large junior high schools available to the children in the community. NLA was chartered in the spring of 1999 and opened for operation that fall for grades 5-8.
