Position Title: School Social Worker/Mental Health Professional (3.0 FTEs)

Position Overview: Responsible for contributing to students’ academic and social success by providing services related to their social and emotional development as well as by linking the school, home, and community through the provision of both direct and indirect services to students, families, and school personnel.
Major Position Duties: The following list of duties is intended as an illustration of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position. Additionally, the amount of time spent in each of the activities will vary depending on student need and the social worker’s schedule, assigned grade levels/building, and other factors. Integrate Ojibwe Language and Culture into your workspace.

Related Services
*
Serves on child-study, pre-referral, and/or other support teams and identifies, as part of those teams, students who require additional or special school services
*
Participates in special education assessment meetings and Individual Education Plan meetings as requested
*
Works with the problems in a child’s living situation that affects the child’s adjustment to school
*
Prepares a social or developmental history for children with disabilities
*
Provides individual, small group, or family counseling
*
Mobilizes family, school, and community resources to enable students to learn as effectively as possible in their educational programs
*
Assists in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies
*
Assists in the development of Individual Health Care Plans and 504 Plans
Student Services
*
Provides crisis intervention services
*
Develops intervention strategies to increase academic success
*
Assists with conflict resolution and anger management
*
Helps students develop appropriate social interaction skills
*
Assists students in understanding and accepting self and others
*
Monitors student mental health conditions
*
Identifies and provides supports to enrolled students who have disclosed that they are pregnant
Parent/Family Services
*
Works with parents to facilitate their support in their student’s school adjustment
*
Alleviates family stress to enable students to function more effectively in school and community
*
Assists parents in accessing programs and utilizing school and community resources available to them and their children
*
Notifies parents when further medical evaluation is indicated
School Personnel Services
*
Provides staff with essential information to better understand factors affecting a student’s performance and behavior (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.)
*
Assesses students with mental health concerns
*
Develops staff in-service training programs
*
Assists teachers with behavior management
*
Provides direct support to staff
School-Community Liaison Services
*
Processes referrals to outside agencies
*
Obtains and coordinates community resources to meet students’ needs
*
Helps school district receive adequate support from social and mental health agencies
*
Advocates for new and improved community and school services to meet the needs of students and families
*
Helps the system respond effectively to each child’s needs
District Services
*
Assists in developing and implementing educational programs for exceptional children
*
Develops alternative programs for students with attendance concerns or involvement with the law
*
Identifies and reports child abuse and neglect
*
Provides consultation regarding school law and school policy including IDEA and Section 504
*
Provides case management for students and families requiring multiple resources
*
Maintains confidential records
*
Is knowledgeable about all district policies
*
Prepares required reports
*
Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
*
Must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in social work or a related mental health field
*
Must hold current Minnesota school social worker licensure or be eligible to receive appropriate licensure for this position
*
Experience working with American Indian youth is preferred
General Skills and Knowledge
*
Must be able to assess emergency situations and act accordingly
*
Must have good oral and written communication skills
*
Must demonstrate basic computer and technology-use skills
*
Must demonstrate a willing attitude to be a part of the school team
*
Must maintain a strong sense of professionalism
*
Must have a solid understanding of confidentiality
*
Must be highly organized.
*
Must be highly motivated and demonstrate a positive attitude
*
Is expected to participate in ongoing professional and staff development, both independently and through system-offered opportunities

Must hold a valid MN driver’s license
Physical Requirements
*
Requires standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, simple grasping, pushing pulling, fine motor and gross motor skills, bending, lifting, squatting, kneeling, climbing, and reaching
*
Ability to physically intervene with students as required to manage crisis situations
*
Requires the stamina to stand all day, every day of the week as needed

Salary and Benefit Range:
Under EDMN Starting Annual Salary Range of $60,313 - $62,369 based on experience (Three years’ experience credit given).
