DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION POSITION STATUS: Full-time-1.0 FTE, 260 days per year, year-round position as per contract START DATE: 2025-2026 school year COMPENSATION: Salary:$99,000-120,000 Per Year BENEFITS: Health Insurance, Dental Coverage, Paid Time Off (PTO), TRA or PERA Contributions, Long-Term Disability, Life Insurance, and access to a range of additional benefits, such as short-term disability and accident insurance. ABOUT NORTH LAKES ACADEMY: Serving the Forest Lake and surrounding areas since 1999, North Lakes Academy provides a personalized learning environment designed to meet a wide variety of academic needs. With strong core subjects and a full complement of liberal arts courses, NLA provides quality learning in a responsive learning atmosphere. Currently, we operate an elementary campus (grades K-6) and a secondary campus (grades 7-12) both in Forest Lake, serving a total of 460 students; with 30% receiving special education and another approximately 10% on a Section 504 plan. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: * Minnesota Director of Special Education Licensure required. * Minnesota Teaching License required. * Experience as a Special Education Administrator, Special Education Supervisor, or Special Education Coordinator PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: * Experience as a Principal, Assistant Principal, or other curriculum advisor or due process compliance officer desired. * Experience supervising student support services. * Experience with providing or overseeing special education in a charter school or small school district. JOB DESCRIPTION: The Director of Special Education and Student Support Services, under the Superintendent's guidance, and as a key member of the district leadership team, is responsible for creating and implementing a strategic vision and action plan for these essential services: special education, Section 504, health services, and support for homeless students. Key tasks include ensuring alignment with district goals and compliance with state and federal laws, driving continuous program improvement through data analysis, collaborating with school and district leaders to lead implementation of our strategic plan, and overseeing special education-specific professional development. The Director fosters collaboration among staff, families, and community partners to promote inclusive practices, high quality instruction, specially designed instruction, and strong student outcomes. Additionally, the role involves leadership in direct mentorship and development of special education staff, conflict resolution, stakeholder engagement, and maintaining high standards of quality assurance across all services. The Director also hires and contracts with related services providers and oversees their services. A successful background check is required. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Needed: Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster collaboration among diverse stakeholders. In-depth knowledge of Minnesota and federal special education regulations, student support services, compliance standards, MTSS, PBIS, and Common Core State Standards. Proficiency in data extraction, reporting, and analysis tools to support decision-making and program evaluation. Ability to work independently and collaboratively to identify and resolve challenges effectively. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the capacity to facilitate meetings, resolve conflict, develop and implement work plans, and engage with individuals and groups in various settings. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse populations, ensuring inclusive and productive engagement across different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
