JOB SUMMARY:
Assists district occupational therapists by working directly with students with occupational therapy service requirements. COTAs implement and establish treatment plans developed by the Occupational Therapist (OT), which works to improve, develop, restore or maintain a child’s active participation in educational environments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
% of Time
80% Direct Student Support
* Implement occupational therapy treatment plans and programs developed in collaboration with the supervising OT.
* Provide direct, individual and/or group therapy to students with diverse needs, including but not limited to fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory processing, visual-motor integration, self-help skills, and adaptive equipment use.
* Assist the supervising OT in conducting screenings, assessments, and data collection as needed.
* Monitor student progress and document treatment interventions and outcomes accurately and in a timely manner, in accordance with school district policies and professional standards.
* Supervises students in individual, small group, and large groups settings. Promotes inclusion and social interaction among all students.
* Assist in creating and maintaining a positive learning environment.
15% Indirect Student Support
* Collaborates and communicates with occupational therapists, classroom teachers, special education teachers, and other non-licensed staff to support instruction.
* Provide training and support to school staff and parents on strategies and techniques to support student occupational performance.
* Prepare and maintain therapy materials and equipment in a clean and organized manner.
* Prepare and assist with individual student data collection.
5% Professional Development and Support
* Attends meetings and training as assigned.
* Participate in annual, required training activities.
Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
WORK REQUIREMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS:
Education/Certification/Licensure Requirements:
* 2 Year Associate of Applied Science degree.
* Board Certification from National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
* High School diploma or equivalent.
* Valid State of Minnesota Driver’s License.
* Complete Personal Care Assistance Training prior to working with students.
Experience:
* Previous experience as a COTA and/or school/student experience preferred.

* Ability to relate to students and staff and maintain a positive learning and working environment.
* Basic computer and keyboarding skills.
* Intermediate internet knowledge.
* Intermediate reading and writing skills.
* Ability to communicate effectively with students who have a wide variety of needs which may include limitations in communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to communicate effectively with other staff.
* Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
* Math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rate, ratio and percent.
* Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
* Ability to select therapy activities which match student’s needs, capabilities, interests, and occupational profile.
* Ability to assist OTs with implementing Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals and requirements to increase student independence.
* Organizational and time management skills including the ability to meet deadlines.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Electronic Devices and Software Required:
* Operates occupational therapy equipment.
* Operates office equipment including computer, phone system, laminator, copier, scanner and calculator.
* Operates assistive technology and other equipment.
Supervision of Other Employees:
* This position does not provide supervision or work direction to any other District employees.
* The position may assist in training others.
* Ability and willingness to cross train and cover other ESP positions.
Physical Job Requirements:
* Position involves extended periods of time on feet (standing, sitting, kneeling, squatting).
* Position involves occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
