Assistant Director of Operations - Albany Area Schools

Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the Assistant Director of Operations role involves managing and supervising personnel across Building Maintenance, Food Service, and Information Technology departments, either directly or through designated leads. Key responsibilities include recruitment, personnel actions such as evaluations and discipline, and oversight of seasonal staff. The position also involves coordinating staff development and ensuring adequate staffing and resources. Additional duties include overseeing maintenance operations, managing food service operations in compliance with health and safety standards, supporting IT infrastructure and network management, and maintaining collaborative relationships with transportation service providers. The role requires strong leadership, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Direct Supervision: Technology Coordinator, Building Maintenance Coordinator, Food Service Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, Head Cooks, and Head Building Maintenance
- Indirect Supervision: Food Service and Custodial staff
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages and supervises all Building Maintenance, Food Service and/or Information Technology personnel directly or through designed supervisory or lead positions.
- Oversees and supports the Building Maintenance Coordinator and provides leadership in the daily operation of custodial and maintenance service programs.
- Oversees and supports the Food Service Coordinator with overseeing and directing all aspects of the food service operations dealing with meal production and catering.
- Oversees and supports the Information Technology Coordinator with all networking related hardware and software.
- Maintains a proactive and collaborative relationship with the district’s contracted transportation service providers.
- Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Two-year college degree and two years of leadership experience preferred; and/or evidence of equivalent education and experience necessary to perform the requirements of the work. Requires a valid MN driver's license. Currently or able to be certified within 1 year: Pool Operator license, Certified Food Protection Manager license & MN Boiler License.
Essential Knowledge And Specialized Subject Knowledge Required To Perform The Essential Functions Of The Job:
- Knowledge of the operation of building management systems (e.g. security systems, HVAC systems, mechanical, plumbing, masonry, and electrical work, etc.), and preventive maintenance practices.
- Fundamentals of supervision.
- Fundamentals, concepts and processes of planning and contracting out contracted services.
- District administrative policies and procedures (i.e. purchasing, HR, accounting, records and data retention requirements)
- Custodial equipment, techniques and supplies.
- Federal and state health and safety codes , laws, and regulations.
- Building and construction codes and requirements.
- Knowledge of HVAC operation equipment, repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge regarding the proper storage of all custodial supplies and chemicals.
- Office administrative and recordkeeping principles, practices, and requirements pertaining to assignment.
- Relevant laws, rules, guidelines, and standards pertaining to menu planning, food production, and sanitary/food storage requirements, meal programs, and menu planning.
- Food production, purchasing, inventory, and food preparation techniques and methods.
- Food and health requirements as governed by federal and state laws and regulations.
- Proper food handling and preparation procedures.
- Nutritional guidelines, requirements, and standards.
- Recordkeeping, reporting, and administrative requirements involved in managing programs/services.
- Fundamentals of financial, point of sale, and accounting procedures of food service operations and programs.

- Reading, writing, and speaking English proficiently.

- Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other District staff, students, and members of the public.
- Able to effectively utilize technology to streamline work processes and data.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, department heads, and district administrators.
- Delegating, supervising, training, evaluating and planning work assignments and priorities for department staff.
- Planning, implementing and monitoring various departmental projects, programs, renovations and contracted services across the district.
- Applying procurement techniques, e.g., bid work, preparing project specifications, pricing and ordering.
- Planning, overseeing and developing preventive maintenance plans, schedules and procedures.
- Planning, prioritizing, and organizing tasks and functions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Work Environment:
Duties are generally performed in a typical school setting where there are minimal environmental hazards and risks. Employee(s) may be exposed to disagreeable conditions involving human/student/parental contact.
Physical Job Requirements:
Employee is continuously required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; frequently talks, hears, reaches with hands and arms, and sits; intermittently stands, walks, climbs, stoops, kneels and/or crouches in the performance of the job. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Salary:
- $60,000 - $80,000 per year.
- Contract is 260 days.
