Job Purpose: To oversee and supervise all aspects of the maintenance, safety and improvements of parish buildings and properties, including church, school, rectory, and cemetery. Duties include managing daily operations of facilities, coordination of volunteers, project planning and ordering of materials, working cooperatively with the pastor, Director of Parish Operations, and other staff members and volunteers to provide efficient, safe, and effective pastoral and educational environments.
Statement on Working for the Catholic Church: Employment in and by the Catholic Church is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. General Responsibilities: Employment in and by the Church is substantially different from secular employment. Church employees must conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with and supportive of the mission and purpose of the Church. This position does not require that the employee be a Catholic.
Maintenance
* Maintain building systems (boiler, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.) and equipment in a fully operational manner.
* Daily walk-through with an eye for monitoring function of equipment, stocking supplies, and miscellaneous repairs and cleaning.
* Ensure that rooms are set up and ready according to facility use schedule.
* Supervise and perform, as needed, lawn and grounds maintenance, snow removal, salt and sanding.
* Manage maintenance and operations of cemetery grounds, including the mausoleum. Operate lift and assist with entombments as needed.
* Assist with liturgical environment activities to decorate the church for liturgical seasons.
* While on the premises, be aware of the presence of other people and ensure that they are on site for a valid reason. Take security actions required to maintain safety and order, including responding as needed to security and fire alarms that may occur outside of normal working hours.
* Manage vendors for contract services: write proposals, seek bids, review contracts with the Director of Parish Operations.
* Lead annual inspection of campus by fire inspector and insurance inspector and correct any noted deficiencies.
* Implement, assign, and direct building repairs and renovations in coordination with the Director of Parish Operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:
* Knowledge and experience with the basic techniques of facilities management, electrical, plumbing, mechanical maintenance, carpentry, and grounds maintenance and supervision.
* Knowledgeable of the requirements for handling chemicals and hazardous materials including bloodborne pathogens.
* Knowledge of safe operating and maintenance of cleaning machines, mowers, lifts, and other equipment needed for maintenance.
* The ability to supervise, schedule, and evaluate employees and direct their work.
* Positive and consistent communication skills with all staff and parishioners.
* The ability to encourage a positive working attitude and environment with all staff and volunteers.
* Problem solving skills, time management, and conflict management.
* The ability to coach volunteer maintenance workers in the methods of proper building maintenance and equipment operation.
* Driver's license and adequate insurance. Use of personal vehicle may occasionally be required.
* The nature of the work requires availability by cell phone 24/7.
* Knowledge of Microsoft computing environment including competency in email, Word, Excel, and Google Suite. Management of computerized system for HVAC.
Education and Experience
* A high school diploma or the equivalent
* Five years of experience as a school custodian or the equivalent in custodial services or experiences in another firm or institution.
* Prior supervisory experience.
Physical Demands
* To be able to climb stairs and ladders and to work at heights.
* Ability to see items that need repair.
* Ability to be on feet for extended periods of time.
* Execution of tasks that require repetitive motion.
* Ability to operate machinery such as scissors lift, lawnmower, floor cleaner, and other such equipment that may be needed to complete tasks.
* Pushing, pulling, bending, and ability to lift at least 100 pounds.
* Ability to operate tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
* Successful completion of pre-employment physical.
