POSITION: AMERICAN INDIAN EDUCATION DIRECTOR
JOB DESCRIPTION: Onamia Public Schools is seeking a passionate and culturally grounded American Indian Education Director to lead initiatives that support the success and well-being of American Indian students. This role coordinates culturally responsive programming, provides leadership in professional development, and builds strong relationships with families, tribal communities, and school staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Development & Leadership
* Lead the implementation of culturally relevant American Indian Individualized Learning Plans.
* Deliver professional development aligned with culturally responsive and equity-centered practices.
* Integrate Ojibwe language and cultural traditions into the curriculum and student programming.
Student Support & Advocacy
* Serve as a consultant on student behavior and interventions alongside Student Support Services.
* Support implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) through a cultural lens.
Family, Community & Tribal Engagement
* Foster strong partnerships with families, tribal governments, and community organizations.
* Represent the district in tribal/community education boards and task forces.
Communication & Outreach
* Create and manage communication strategies to keep stakeholders informed and engaged.
* Promote Indian Education programs through strategic outreach and social media.
Administrative & Fiscal Oversight
* Manage program budgets and grants, ensuring compliance with state, federal, and tribal requirements.
* Track financial data, develop annual budgets, and monitor funding sources to ensure effective financial management.
Program Evaluation & Reporting
* Lead data collection, program evaluation, and continuous improvement planning.
* Ensure timely reporting for grants and department compliance.
Team & Departmental Contribution
* Support a positive, inclusive team culture through collaboration and innovation.
Assist with special projects and contribute to the overall success of the district.
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, Public Administration, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred). At least two (2) years of professional experience in education or program administration
Preferred Knowledge & Skills
* Strong knowledge of American Indian history, cultures, and educational issues (Ojibwe preferred)
* Expertise in culturally responsive education and equity practices
* Experience with student support frameworks and behavioral interventions
* Grant writing, compliance, and budget management
* Excellent communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder engagement
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and education technology tools
