The Brooklyn Center Community School (BCCS) District is seeking applicants to join our team for the upcoming school year. The Attendance and Engagement Specialist will perform skilled administrative support work preparing and maintaining attendance records and files, preparing reports and related work as apparent or assigned. Responsible for providing services to assigned schools in the investigation and counseling of students with attendance or engagement concerns. Assesses students and families; interprets attendance policies; works as a team member to develop prevention/intervention strategies; provides case management; monitors student progress; and makes referrals. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Data and Accountability.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
* Gather and review attendance data to identify students who are truant.
* Collaborate with families, students, and school staff to develop interventions for students who are truant and develop individualized service plans to improve student engagement and attendance.
* Implement case management services (including individual counseling); monitor student/family progress; and make referrals to other professional staff members or community agencies as needed.
* Assess students with attendance concerns and make home visits as needed.
* Provide families with information related to the needs of their child and acts as a resource to parents/guardians by providing family support activities and communicating the importance of student engagement and school attendance.
* Act as a resource to administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, clerical staff, and health services personnel regarding attendance programs, interpretation of attendance policies/laws, and record-keeping requirements.
* Assist building staff with implementing truancy prevention programs and recommends strategies to support and improve regular school attendance.
* Serve as a liaison between school and such agencies as social services, court services, and the other agencies regarding student truancy, including representing the school district at truancy court.
* Work with social workers, county staff, and Be@School personnel in support of student attendance.
* Maintain necessary records (ensuring confidentiality of students and their families) and prepare related reports.
* Prepare routine attendance data reports and submit to designated administrators or school district personnel.
* Ensure accuracy of all student absences and tardies in the student information system and the county reporting systems.
* Call parents to notify about and determine reason for student’s absence.
* Prepare and mail form letters to parents notifying them of their child’s absences.
* Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
* Any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities preferred:
* General knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and equipment
* General knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic
* General knowledge of school system routine and student record keeping
* Required Work Experience in Addition to Formal Education/ Training: Moderate experience working in a school district or administrative office.
* Ability to develop and follow detailed work procedures
* Ability to organize and perform work independently
* Ability to type accurately and at a reasonable rate of speed
* Ability to meet the public effectively
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
* Ability to relate and communicate effectively with people of different cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, walking, squatting/kneeling, climbing, balancing, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, hearing, and seeing.
Working Condition:
Work is primarily performed in a typical office/ classroom setting and is exposed to a minimum of environmental conditions. Must have ability to perform at moderate to high pace for extended periods of time. Work is performed in an environment of professionalism.
Pay and Benefits: $24.40/hour- $29.92/hour- based on education and experience
