Position Description: Executive Director
Reports to: Board of Directors
Location: Discovery Woods School (some remote work)
Salary Range: $65,000 - $90,000
Position Type: Full-time (reduced summer hours)
Supervisory Responsibility: All School Staff
Position Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for leading and managing the school. The Executive Director designs and executes a strategic plan to ensure the excellence, sustainability, and growth of the school. This role is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational management, academic excellence, and financial health of the school. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director ensures the school fulfills its mission and meets all charter, regulatory, and performance requirements.
Mission: Provide Brainerd Lakes Area families a choice for quality elementary education centered around the individual needs of the child with a focus on the environment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
Work with the Board of Directors, key funders, stakeholders, and the leadership team to develop a strategic vision and implementation plan to accomplish it (strategic plan).
Set clear academic, growth, operational, and financial goals and manage them; adapt as necessary given changes in internal and external environment and report to the Board of Directors.
Manage strong public transparency systems including public compliance and internal and external reporting.
Academic Oversight:
Ensure that curriculum, instruction, and assessments align with state standards and the school’s charter.
Understand, champion, and support the overall objectives, expectations, and goals of the MN READ Act at the school level.
Oversee administration of standard and internal assessments and analyze student assessment data to improve student outcomes.
Coordinate the MTSS process, and create and manage the scheduling of all intervention services per MN MTSS Guidance.
Teacher and Staff Development:
Manage and coordinate the professional development of staff and provide ongoing opportunities for authentic coaching.
Conduct informal and formal licensed staff evaluations and conduct or oversee non-licensed staff evaluations.
Sustain a culture of shared accountability among teachers and staff.
School Culture and Climate:
Oversee policies and procedures for student discipline, positive school culture, and a safe environment, and adhere to state law.
Support consistent enforcement of conduct and discipline policies; respond to escalated student situations when necessary.
Manage disciplinary and legal hearings/proceedings.
Family and Community Engagement:
Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the school with external stakeholders.
Foster partnerships with families, community organizations, local government, and authorizers.
Lead problem-solving with families whose students are truant or at risk of truancy.
Design a comprehensive student recruitment plan and support with engaging new families (tours and outreach).
Collaborate with outside community agencies to seek resources and activities that will increase participation in school and parent training opportunities.
Human Resources:
Hire, supervise, and evaluate school staff.
Oversee Special Education services to ensure efficacy and compliance
Oversee financial stewardship and school operations
Oversee behavior support staff to ensure compliance with state and federal law
Oversee Title 1 programming
Oversee the Business Manager to develop and communicate school HR policies and support with responding to internal inquiries for employees.
Oversee recruitment for open positions and perform the full life cycle of recruiting activities, including onboarding.
Operations:
Oversee student record keeping by applicable state and federal law.
Design, oversee, and implement school-wide operations (school schedules, safety plans, etc.)
Oversee policies, practices, and procedures for infrastructure and technology.
Coordinate substitute system.
Finance:
Lead site-level budget development, monitoring, and management in conjunction with the external administrative vendor, business manager, and collaboration with the Board of Directors.
Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes small/medium/large individual donations and local/state/federal grants.
Administration and Board Relations:
Identify, manage, and monitor school goals, growth, and priorities.
Prepare required reports for MDE and Authorizer - annual report, school goals, etc.
Make formal reports to the board on student academic performance, student conduct, school safety, and related matters following the annual report and strategic plan.
Ensure District and School Site Verification (staff, board, & vendor roles)
Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the board
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Valid MN teaching license
At least five years of teaching experience
A mastery-level understanding of the Minnesota Academic Standards
In-depth knowledge of teaching reading, both from a theoretical and practical perspective, and experience teaching reading at various grade levels and proficiency levels
Familiarity with adult learning principles and experience coaching, facilitating, and presenting information
Ability to function cooperatively and collaboratively with colleagues
Effective written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of Charter School Law
Prior supervisory or coaching experience
Experience with building operations and financial management
A Master's Degree in Administration, Curriculum and Instruction, or equivalent area of educational specialization
Experience in E-12 curriculum development and educational leadership
Successful experience leading professional development
Knowledge of instructional strategies and practices to support teachers’ efforts in meeting diverse student needs
Willingness to pursue personal and professional growth through attendance at workshops, conferences, courses, and other relevant professional development opportunities
