Shattuck-St. Mary’s (SSM)  is seeking an Assistant Middle School Director, who will report to the Director of the Middle School and teach two class periods in an academic subject. The SSM Middle School serves students in grades 6th through 9th. 

Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is an Episcopal, co-educational, college preparatory, independent boarding/day school serving 400 students in grades 6th-post graduate from 40 states and 22 countries. Set on a beautiful 250-acre campus south of Minneapolis/St. Paul in Minnesota, SSM offers a mix of traditional and progressive education, combining classroom and online learning to best prepare students for college and beyond. Class sizes at SSM are capped at 18 students per section and the student body is motivated to succeed. By cultivating creative and independent thinking, SSM fosters the transformation of its students to become citizens of integrity for an ever-changing world.

We are seeking an Assistant Middle School Director with a deep passion for building community. This person will work closely with the Middle School team to support daily operations and help create a strong, positive experience for students in grades 6–9. The ideal candidate believes in the potential of every student, collaborates effectively within a guidance team, and sees our discipline framework as a tool for growth and accountability. They will act as a role model, foster meaningful relationships, and consistently seek ways to strengthen the community. This role requires someone who is confident navigating tough conversations, comfortable engaging with parents and other stakeholders, and flexible in their approach to leadership and problem-solving.

Shattuck St. Mary’s School is a boarding/day school, and faculty members are expected to be involved with both co-curricular activities and standard residential life duties involved with a residential school setting. In addition, the Middle School Director will teach two sections of an academic subject.  Shattuck-St. Mary’s teacher salaries are based on experience and range from $38,000 for beginning teachers to the mid-70s for our most experienced faculty members. In addition to cash salaries, SSM teachers are eligible to receive generous benefits including family housing and meals on campus.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a student-centered environment with a strong understanding of middle school learners (grades 6–9)
  • Proven ability to build relationships and collaborate with students, families, and faculty
  • Familiarity with student support systems, discipline frameworks, and community-building initiatives.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; able to manage details while seeing the big picture
  • Bachelor''s degree required; leadership experience or prior roles in student life, guidance, or administration preferred
