Community School of Excellence (CSE) is a Pre-Kindergarten to 12th  grade Hmong Language and Culture Charter school that is a family. Job Summary

The primary role of a One Act Play Director is to coordinate, organize, and promote a comprehensive program designed to meet the needs and interests of the school; to provide effective leadership that will enhance the learning environment for students by providing effective, personalized attention; engaging in appropriate instructional and behavioral support; and, modeling “The Excellent Way” with respect, responsibility, and being reflective. The Community School  programs are designed to offer our students the opportunity to participate in co-curricular activities that complement and integrate the school’s mission.

The One Act Play Director is responsible for leading, organizing, and directing the school’s competitive or showcase one act play production. This position provides students with a meaningful and educational theater experience that promotes creativity, collaboration, and performance excellence. The director will oversee all aspects of the production, from play selection and auditions to rehearsals, performances, and competition compliance.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Leadership:

  • Select an appropriate one act play that aligns with school standards and competition guidelines.

  • Develop a production schedule, including auditions, rehearsals, technical workdays, and performances.

  • Communicate clearly with students, parents, staff, and administration regarding rehearsal times, expectations, and event details.

Instruction & Supervision:

  • Instruct students in acting, stage movement, voice projection, and character development.

  • Provide a positive and inclusive environment that supports student growth and teamwork.

  • Supervise students during all practices, performances, and competitions to ensure safety and compliance with school policies.


Production Management:

  • Coordinate with technical crew, set designers, costumers, and lighting/sound personnel.

  • Oversee all aspects of staging, blocking, and technical requirements.

  • Ensure the production meets competition rules and time limits.

Professionalism:

  • Adhere to district policies, MSHSL (or relevant governing body) regulations, and ethical standards.

  • Serve as a positive role model for students and represent the school professionally at all events.

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in theater direction, performance, or production management preferred.

  • Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.

  • Ability to motivate and engage students of varying skill levels.

  • Knowledge of competition guidelines (e.g., MSHSL One Act Play rules, if applicable).

  • Must pass a background check and meet district employment requirements.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to student and other information as required by FERPA

Required Qualifications

  • Current Adult/Pediatric First Aid with CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain
