POSITION DETAILS

Title: Special Education Behavior Interventionist

Grade: 5-8

Start Date: After January 1st, 2025-2026 school year

Full Time FTE: 1.0 


POSITION OVERVIEW

The Special Education Behavior Interventionist plays a key role in creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment by providing behavioral expertise for students receiving special education services or those being supported through the intervention process. This position focuses on prevention, assessment, intervention, and collaborative problem-solving to improve student behavior and social-emotional outcomes. The Behavior Interventionist partners with teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, related service providers, transportation staff, and families to promote positive behavior, improve student access to learning, and ensure compliance with federal and state special education regulations.


As a visible and proactive presence throughout the school, the Behavior Interventionist helps build a positive school culture by reinforcing expectations, implementing supportive interventions, and guiding students in developing self-regulation, responsibility, and personal success.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Behavior Assessment & Intervention

  • Conduct functional behavioral assessments (FBAs) and collect data to analyze behavior patterns and student needs.

  • Develop, implement, monitor, and revise Positive Behavior Support Plans (PBSPs) aligned with student IEPs.

  • Provide direct intervention for students struggling with behavioral regulation.

  • Support crisis response using approved de-escalation strategies; assist with student transitions back into learning environments.

  • Coordinate and document mandated suspension, dismissal, and restrictive procedures in accordance with state/federal guidelines.

  • Support special education students during suspension readmission meetings.

Collaboration & Consultation

  • Work collaboratively with IEP teams, Child Study/CARE Teams, and multidisciplinary professionals to support whole-child needs.

  • Provide coaching and modeling for teachers and paraprofessionals to ensure consistent implementation of behavior plans across settings.

  • Serve as a resource for proactive behavior supports and SEL strategies schoolwide.

  • Assist case managers when student behavior concerns escalate and communicate building-wide trends to administration.

Documentation, Compliance & Communication

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation including:

    • Behavior assessments and data graphs

    • PBSPs and progress monitoring reports

    • Communication logs and incident records

  • Participate in IEP meetings to report progress, review services, and recommend adjustments.

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians to share updates, collaborate on strategies, and provide support for generalization at home.

  • Complete state reporting requirements including DIRS documentation when necessary.

School Culture & Student Support

  • Reinforce behavior expectations and support building-wide initiatives focused on responsibility, safety, and respect.

  • Support supervision in high-traffic areas (hallways, cafeteria, arrival/dismissal, etc.) to encourage positive routines and relationships.

  • Facilitate social-emotional problem solving, goal setting, and restorative practices for students.

  • Support the Transportation Coordinator in investigating bus incidents and supporting student success in transportation environments.

Professional Leadership

  • Serve as a member of Child Study and leadership teams as assigned.

  • Provide professional development to staff in behavior management, trauma-informed care, and equitable discipline practices.

  • Maintain relevant certifications such as CPI/Ukeru; serve as a staff trainer if qualified.
    Engage in ongoing learning to remain current on best practices in behavior intervention and special education compliance.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Preferably in Special Education, Social Work, Psychology or related field

  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with students with behavioral and social-emotional needs in school settings

  • Demonstrated knowledge of:

    • Special education laws, due process requirements, and behavior practices

    • FBA processes and development of PBSPs

    • Crisis prevention, intervention, and de-escalation strategies

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with students, staff, and families

  • Ability to analyze behavior data and adjust supports accordingly

  • Skilled in proactive intervention, conflict resolution, and restorative practices

  • Capacity to remain calm and supportive in high-stress situations

  • Firm belief in student potential and commitment to equitable discipline systems


BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION 

Salary Range: Starting salary of $60,000 or higher based on experience per contract year
