Nature-Based Preschool Assistant Teacher Employment Type: Full-time, Hourly; Year-round OR school year only (September-May) with option for summers off Regular hours: 30-40 hours per week, scheduled hours will be between 8:15am-5:00pm Mon-Fri, occasional night and weekend hours required for special events (~1x/month) Position Start Date: September 1, 2026 Location: Roots and Wings Forest School, 35320 550th Ave, New York Mills MN 56567 Overview Roots and Wings Forest School is a nature-based private school and youth enrichment organization in New York Mills, MN serving children ages 3-12 through year round education and experiences in the great outdoors. As a registered 501(c)3 non-profit, our mission is to awaken and cultivate a deeper connection to nature and self, and to ignite a lifelong love of learning, by guiding children through place-based, child-centered education and experiences in the great outdoors. Flexibility to work with students up to age 12 as needed is required. Position duties include: Assisting Lead Guide with activity implementation based on children?s and seasonal interests, while referring to nature-based curriculums, personal ideas, and state standards including the Minnesota Early Childhood Indicators of Progress. Building relationships with families and children through daily interactions and professional yet friendly communication. Monitoring student progress, encouraging growth, recording observations, and assisting with student assessments. Instilling a daily rhythm for learners. Providing positive guidance to children in navigating social interactions with others. Overseeing classroom activities along with the Lead Guide. Daily set-up, break-down, and cleaning of indoor and outdoor classroom spaces is split between staff. Potential to drive our 14-passenger bus for student transportation Potential to open or close classrooms for the day, early morning or early evening hours Qualifications This position requires a blend of qualifications including knowledge of early childhood education as well as nature-based learning. Candidates should possess curiosity, if not deep understanding, of our local ecosystem with a commitment to helping our learners develop place-based natural knowledge through inquiry and play. A positive, child-centered approach to classroom management aligns with our organization?s values. Our ideal candidate will: Be passionate about educating children in nature. Embrace alternative education models. Assist in creating a balance of emergent curriculum, intentional activities, and unstructured nature play through planning and instruction. Honor our learners as individuals capable of risk-taking, problem-solving, creativity, teamwork, inquiry, and self-awareness. Be self-motivated and self-directed with the flexibility to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills. Feel comfortable and confident about meeting the needs of children outdoors in all seasons - physically able to hike, carry gear, and carry a small child if needed (50 lbs).
