Position Title: Elementary Physical Education and Developmental/Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) Teacher
Department/Building: Riverside Elementary School (K-4)
Reports to: Building Principal
Assignment: 2026-2027 School Year
Hours: Full Time - 1 FTE
Salary Range: $ 46,936 - $ 90,238 (Based on education and experience; wages outlined in the Certified Master Contract located on district website)
Union: Ed MN
FLSA: Overtime Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY
The Elementary PE and DAPE Teacher delivers standards-based physical education instruction to all students while also providing specialized, individualized instruction and services to students with disabilities who require Adapted Physical Education. The role supports students'' physical development, motor skills, health literacy, and social-emotional growth in alignment with district curriculum, state standards, and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
General Physical Education (PE)
- Plan and implement a comprehensive, standards-based physical education curriculum aligned to state standards.
- Deliver developmentally appropriate instruction focused on:
- Motor skills and movement patterns
- Physical fitness and wellness
- Cooperative games and sportsmanship
- Personal and social responsibility
- Assess student progress and maintain accurate records of performance and growth.
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs within general education classes.
- Establish and maintain a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
- Integrate social-emotional learning, teamwork, and positive behavior supports.
Developmental/Adapted Physical Education (DAPE)
- Provide specially designed instruction in physical education for students with disabilities as required by their IEPs.
- Conduct assessments and evaluations to determine eligibility and service needs for Adapted Physical Education.
- Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals related to motor development, physical fitness, and functional movement.
- Collaborate with IEP teams including special education staff, related service providers (OT/PT), and families.
- Modify equipment, environment, and instructional strategies to ensure accessibility and participation.
- Maintain compliance with federal and state special education laws and due process requirements.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, special education staff, paraprofessionals, and administration.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and needs.
- Participate in IEP meetings, child study teams, and multidisciplinary planning.
- Provide guidance to paraprofessionals supporting students in PE/DAPE settings.
Program & Environment Management
- Ensure safe use and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
- Follow district policies regarding student supervision, safety, and emergency procedures.
- Organize and manage equipment inventory and instructional materials.
- Support school-wide initiatives related to wellness and physical activity.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain appropriate licensure and endorsements.
- Engage in ongoing professional development related to PE, DAPE, and inclusive practices.
- Stay current on best practices in physical education and adapted physical education.
- Uphold professional, ethical, and legal standards.
Qualifications
Required
- Valid state teaching license in Physical Education
- DAPE/Adapted Physical Education licensure
- Knowledge of child development, motor learning, and physical fitness principles.
- Understanding of special education processes, including IEP development and implementation.
Preferred
- Experience teaching elementary PE and/or DAPE.
- Experience conducting motor assessments
- Training in inclusive practices and behavior management strategies.

- Ability to design and implement individualized physical education programming.
