The Elementary School Principal serves as the educational leader and chief administrator of the school. This role is responsible for establishing a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that promotes the academic and social-emotional growth of every student. The Principal will manage school operations, evaluate and support staff, develop community partnerships, and drive continuous improvement in instructional practices.
Compensation
At the time of hiring, initial placement on the salary program shall be determined by mutual agreement between the individual principal, the employer, and the Association.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Leadership
- Curriculum & Instruction: Oversee the implementation of a rigorous, standards-based curriculum and ensure effective, differentiated instructional strategies are used in every classroom.
- Staff Evaluation & Support: Conduct regular classroom observations, provide constructive feedback, and conduct formal performance evaluations for teachers and support staff.
- Professional Development: Design and facilitate targeted professional development opportunities based on student data and teacher needs.
- Data Analysis: Lead staff in analyzing student achievement data to inform instructional decisions, set academic goals, and close achievement gaps.
School Culture & Student Wellness
- Safe Environment: Foster a positive, safe, and equitable school climate that celebrates diversity and encourages student engagement.
- Behavior Management: Implement consistent, fair, and restorative disciplinary practices. Oversee Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) programs.
- Student Support: Collaborate with school counselors, special education staff, and social workers to ensure the comprehensive academic and emotional needs of all students are met.
Operations & Management
- Budgeting: Manage the school budget responsibly, allocating resources effectively to support instructional goals and school programs.
- Scheduling: Develop master schedules for students and staff that maximize instructional time and facilitate teacher collaboration.
- Facility Safety: Oversee the daily operations and maintenance of the school building, ensuring all safety protocols and emergency response plans are up to date and practiced.
- Compliance: Ensure the school complies with all federal, state, and local laws, as well as district policies.
Family & Community Engagement
- Communication: Maintain clear, consistent, and transparent communication with parents and guardians regarding school policies, events, and student progress.
- Partnerships: Build strong relationships with community organizations, local businesses, and parent-teacher organizations (e.g., PTA/PTO) to support school initiatives.
Key Skills & Competencies
- Leadership: Strong ability to inspire, motivate, and guide a diverse team of educators.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, staff, and parents.
- Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to handle complex issues, resolve conflicts, and make data-informed decisions under pressure.
- Empathy: A deep commitment to the social, emotional, and academic well-being of young children.
- Technological Proficiency: Familiarity with Student Information Systems (SIS), data analytics platforms, and modern educational technology tools.
Qualifications
- Education: Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, Educational Administration, or a closely related field.
- Licensure: Valid Minnesota Principal or School Administrator Certification/License.
- Experience: Previous experience in a school leadership or administrative role (e.g., Assistant Principal, Instructional Coach) is highly preferred.
- Background Check: Must pass all required state and federal background checks and clearances.
