JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
The Special Education Teacher provides students with special needs case management, learning activities, and experiences that address their unique needs. This role ensures all regulatory standards are met as required by federal and state governments and operates within the Teacher Code of Ethics as defined by Minnesota State Law.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Development and Implementation:
Provide research-based specialized instruction as outlined in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Prepare preplanned schedules of individualized and small group age-appropriate activities for classroom instruction.
Coordinate and conduct Part B evaluations and participate in multidisciplinary team assessments.
Utilize a variety of materials and teaching techniques, including providing curriculum to develop academic and behavioral skills.
Student Engagement and Supervision:
Maintain suitable classroom and behavior management to ensure a safe learning environment.
Participate physically with students in activities being taught.
Monitor and evaluate student progress continuously to maximize learning opportunities.
Meet student needs as defined in the IEP for reading, math, social skills, and behavior support.
Staff Management and Development:
Supervise and provide direction for classroom Paraprofessionals.
Assist in developing and updating Paraprofessional schedules to meet student needs in mainstream classrooms.
Collaborate with other Special Education Teachers to ensure successful transitions.
Administrative and Reporting:
Maintain comprehensive records and reports for compliance with state and federal regulations.
Prepare documentation including evaluations, observations, and progress reports.
Coordinate with Speech schedules and ensure timely student attendance.
Communication and Community Relations:
Educate and consult with parents regarding the provision of services and methods to assist their child.
Consult with related services (OT, PT, DAPE, ASD, PI) to meet student needs.
Participate in child study meetings, IEP conferences, and parent meetings.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field
Current Minnesota teaching license in EBD/SLD or ABS
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year of experience teaching, advising, or working with youth with disabilities in an educational or advocacy setting
Experience in due process procedures including conducting evaluations, writing IEP’s, monitoring progress, and facilitating meetings.
Knowledge/Skills:
Strong understanding of Minnesota academic standards
Effective instructional planning
Ability to prioritize, stay organized, and manage multiple tasks independently and collaboratively
Ability to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs).
Technology Proficiency:
Demonstrated fluency with educational technology tools including Google Workspace (Docs, Meet, Drive, Calendar), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and learning management systems (LMS).
Ability to integrate technology creatively and effectively into instruction and school operations, with a growth mindset toward emerging tools and practices, including AI.
Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive teaching strategies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience using Sped Forms special education software
Willingness to participate in or lead extracurricular activities or school events
Experience with educational technology integration and innovation, digital instructional design, or AI-informed teaching practices.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Requirements: Frequently required to talk and hear. Occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
Lifting: Occasionally required to lift up to 100 lbs; never required to lift more than 100 lbs.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Schedule: 175 days, 8 hours per day (typically 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.) following the Board Approved School Calendar.
Position Type: School Days and Professional Development Days.
Technology Requirements: Must maintain and regularly update Google Calendar as the school uses Google Workspace.
Salary Range: At 1.0 FTE: BA, Step 0 (Tier 1) at $29,650/year to DOC, Step 0 (Tier 4) at $56,075/year. Placement varies by education. Steps determined by CCS tenure; new hires start at Step 0. See CCS Employment page.
