Collaborates with: Online Principal, all district-level managers and coordinators, and the in-person team

In-Person Program (PreK–8)
JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE
The In-Person Principal serves as the principal administrator for Crosslake Community School’s PreK–8 In-Person Program, leading educational excellence for students through hands-on, interactive learning experiences. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the in-person school: instructional leadership, supervision and evaluation of teaching and support staff, student support and discipline, school climate, family and community engagement, campus safety, and operational management of the building. The In-Person Principal collaborates closely with the Superintendent and the Online Principal to ensure cohesive district-wide implementation of the mission while developing distinctive in-person learning opportunities that emphasize environmental education and community connections.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional Leadership and Program Vision
Develop and implement a comprehensive vision for the PreK–8 In-Person Program aligned with district mission and the Strategic Roadmap
Create program-specific goals for academic achievement, hands-on learning, and campus community building
Lead curriculum development and implementation ensuring Minnesota standards compliance and environmental education integration
Visit classrooms and observe instruction on a consistent, predictable basis; provide instructional feedback that is specific and tied to observable practice
Monitor in-person student achievement and engagement data; use data to guide program decisions and implement improvement strategies
Ensure oversight of and follow-through on School initiatives (HRS, Catalyst, MnMTSS, Read Act, and similar)
Collaborate with the Superintendent on district-wide strategic initiatives and resource allocation
Staff Supervision, Development & Fair Treatment
Supervise and evaluate in-person teaching and support staff, ensuring consistent support across PreK–8
Hold 1:1 meetings with direct reports on a consistent, predictable schedule
Set clear performance expectations with direct reports and provide feedback that is specific and actionable
Complete staff evaluations on time and in accordance with the district evaluation process, using documented evidence
Apply expectations and standards consistently across staff regardless of personal relationship
Treat staff members the same after they raise a concern, ask a hard question, or disagree with a decision
Distribute opportunities — committees, leadership roles, professional development — equitably among qualified staff
Address underperformance directly rather than letting issues persist
Lead campus staff meetings and in-person professional development initiatives
Foster a collaborative culture and “one team” mentality among all campus staff
Coordinate with the District HR/Business Manager on in-person staff recruitment, evaluation, and professional development
Collaborate with the District Special Education Manager to ensure appropriate on-site services for students with disabilities
Oversee tracking of staff PTO, substitute scheduling, and paraprofessional coverage in coordination with the District HR/Business Manager and the In-Person Administrative Assistant
Student Support & School Climate
Oversee development of in-person student support systems and campus engagement opportunities
Lead Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) processes specific to the in-person learning environment, in coordination with the In-Person MnMTSS Lead and the District Teaching & Learning Coordinator
Maintain visible presence with students throughout the building
Respond to student behavior and well-being concerns in a timely, fair manner
Coordinate with the District Special Education Manager and the District Student Support Services Manager on student needs
Create a positive school climate focused on student wellbeing, belonging, and environmental stewardship
Implement campus-based positive behavior support strategies and community-building initiatives
Approve and provide oversight for after-school programs, field trips, and extracurricular activities
Follow through on commitments made to students and families
Process & Documentation Compliance
Follow due process for student discipline, including parent notification and the right to be heard
Document student discipline incidents accurately and on time
Follow mandated reporting requirements for student safety concerns
Maintain student and personnel records in accordance with FERPA, MDE, and authorizer requirements
Complete required district reporting (attendance, enrollment, incident reports) on time and accurately
Develop and maintain in-person school handbooks, policies, and campus procedures, ensuring alignment with district policy and applicable law
Family & Community Communication
Respond to family communications within a reasonable timeframe
Provide families with information about school events, expectations, and changes in advance
Handle family complaints and concerns with professionalism and through documented, fair processes
Represent the school accurately and positively to families and the Crosslake community
Build and maintain strong relationships with local families and the Crosslake community — including the LAKE Foundation, City of Crosslake, Chamber of Commerce, and area businesses — in cooperation with the District Marketing Coordinator, with particular focus on uplifting and strengthening the Superintendent’s relationships with these key contacts and stakeholders
Develop community-based learning opportunities and local partnership initiatives that reinforce the environmental education mission
Coordinate with the District Teaching & Learning Coordinator to support the establishment and maintenance of a Parent Advisory Council that is fully run and operated by parents
Represent the in-person program at local community events and functions
Campus Operations & Facilities Management
Maintain daily operational systems (schedules, attendance, arrival/dismissal, safety drills)
Oversee campus safety protocols, emergency procedures, and facility security measures
Coordinate with the District Facilities Manager and the LAKE Foundation on facility needs, improvements, and maintenance planning
Lead district transportation operations, including the relationship with the contracted transportation vendor (Crosby-Ironton), bus routing and scheduling, daily transportation safety, driver and route communication, and family communication regarding transportation
Coordinate field trip transportation and logistics
Ensure appropriate transportation accommodations for students with disabilities in coordination with the District Special Education Manager
Supervise non-instructional staff assigned to the campus, including custodial, food service, and campus support personnel, in coordination with the District Facilities Manager and District Food Service Manager
Coordinate with the District Student Data & Enrollment Coordinator on in-person enrollment processes and attendance management
Work with the District Technology Manager and District Technology Coordinator to integrate technology effectively in classroom instruction
Anticipate operational issues before they become urgent and manage program-level deadlines and deliverables on time
Environmental Education Leadership
Collaborate with district staff to implement the Environmental Learning Plan with emphasis on outdoor and hands-on experiences
Ensure integration of environmental education throughout campus curriculum and daily operations
Promote outdoor learning opportunities and environmental stewardship as core campus experiences
Coordinate environmental projects and community impact initiatives that engage local partnerships
Work with the Online Principal on shared environmental initiatives and cross-program collaboration
Alignment with District Direction
Implement district decisions in the in-person program, even when the Principal personally disagreed during deliberation
Communicate district policies and decisions to staff and families consistently with how they were communicated by district leadership
Speak about the Superintendent, the Board, and other administrators respectfully when those individuals are not present
Raise concerns about district direction through direct conversation with the Superintendent rather than through staff, families, or community members
Information Stewardship & Upward Communication
Share information with the Superintendent that the Superintendent would otherwise need to learn from another source (incidents, complaints, staff concerns, legal matters)
Represent situations accurately when reporting to the Superintendent, including information that does not reflect well on the Principal or the in-person program
Handle confidential student, personnel, and family information in accordance with policy and law
Maintain appropriate boundaries around information shared in confidence by staff or families
Professional Boundaries
Maintain professional boundaries with staff: do not engage in gossip, take sides in interpersonal conflicts, or share information staff would not expect to be shared
Maintain professional boundaries with families: communicate through appropriate channels and do not become over-involved in family matters outside the school’s role
Maintain professional boundaries with students: ensure interactions are appropriate to the role and follow school policy on social media and after-hours contact
Separate personal relationships from professional decisions about hiring, evaluation, or student matters
Conflict Handling
Address disagreements directly with the person involved rather than through other staff or families
Handle complaints and concerns brought by staff through documented, fair processes
Do not use staff meetings, family communications, or community forums to relitigate decisions made elsewhere
Separate the issue from the person when working through disagreements
Judgment, Decision-Making & Self-Correction
Gather relevant information before making significant program decisions
Make decisions within a reasonable timeframe — neither rushed nor unduly delayed
Communicate decisions and their rationale once made
Maintain composure in high-pressure or emotionally charged situations

Receive feedback from staff and the Superintendent in a way that invites continued input
District Collaboration and Communication
Participate in weekly 1:1 meetings with the Superintendent and weekly District Cabinet meetings
Conduct weekly 1:1 meetings with the Online Principal for cross-program coordination and collaboration
Coordinate with the District Teaching & Learning Coordinator on in-person assessment delivery and curriculum implementation
Work with all district-level managers and coordinators to ensure in-person program integration and resource sharing

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Licensing
Master’s degree required
Minnesota Administrative Licensure (K–12 Principal) required at time of hire
Valid Minnesota teaching license with at least three years of experience
Environmental education background or training preferred
Experience and Elementary Education Expertise
Minimum five years of teaching experience in a K–8 setting
Prior administrative or leadership experience in educational settings
Demonstrated success in elementary curriculum development and implementation
Experience with hands-on, project-based learning approaches
Background in campus management and facility operations
Knowledge and Skills
Comprehensive understanding of best practices in K–8 education
Knowledge of Minnesota academic standards and elementary education requirements
Understanding of charter school operations and compliance requirements
Working knowledge of FERPA, mandated reporting, and student due process requirements
Strong project management and campus operations skills
Excellence in community engagement and family communication

WORKING CONDITIONS
On-site position at the Crosslake campus with regular presence required for campus leadership
Standard business hours with flexibility for campus events and family engagement
Physical demands include campus supervision, outdoor activities, and facility oversight
Regular coordination with the Superintendent, the Online Principal, and all district-level managers and coordinators
Occasional evening meetings for family events or community engagement
Extended interaction with students, families, staff, and community members

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Employment Agreement: 12-month position, year-round (240 days)
Schedule: 8 hours per day with flexibility for campus programming and family engagement needs
Position Type: On-site at the Crosslake campus with occasional travel for professional development
Technology Requirements: Must maintain an updated Google Calendar and coordinate with district technology platforms
Meeting Requirements: Must attend weekly 1:1s with the Superintendent, weekly 1:1s with the Online Principal, District Cabinet meetings, and collaboration sessions with district-level staff
Delegation Structure: Must establish clear campus delegation protocols during absences
Salary Range: $84,640 - $105,800 annually, depending on qualifications and experience
