Job Category - Education (Children / Youth) Compensation - $50/hr for instruction plus additional accompaniment opportunities Education - Bachelor''s Degree Position Type - Part Time The Friends School of Minnesota (FSMN) seeks a talented and committed Piano Teacher to begin September 2026, serving individual students seeking lessons in our extracurricular music program. This position is based at FSMN in the Hamline-Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota, and reports to the After School Music Coordinator and the Extracurricular Activities Coordinator. FSMN is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich students? engagement with music as a means of individual expression and the foundation for lifelong learning. The instruction rate is $50/hr. We offer half hour lessons from 3:00-5:45 M-F, scheduled by semester. Lesson enrollment varies each day according to registration. Additional opportunities to accompany, though not required, are available throughout the school year, including in-school performances and evening all-school events. Rehearsals and all school performances are paid at a higher rate. Applicants must submit a letter of interest and resume. Responsibilities Piano Instruction: Teach individual piano lessons, focusing on technical development, music theory, and expression for students grades K-8 of varying skill levels. Curriculum/Method Implementation: Implement an engaging, inclusive piano method curriculum that meets standards and incorporates differentiated instruction to support all learners, examples include Faber Piano Adventures, Alfred?s Basic Piano Library, The Suzuki Method. Repertoire Selection: Program a diverse and imaginative range of piano repertoire that fosters cultural awareness and artistic growth. Performance Management: Prepare students for a variety of performance opportunities. Piano teacher hosts evening studio recitals held in winter and spring. Other opportunities include in-school events and outside community events hosted by FSMN or other partnering organizations. Student Mentorship: Serve as an advisor and mentor to students, fostering a positive, inclusive environment that supports their overall well-being and creative interests Mission Alignment: Support the school?s mission and leadership through professional conduct and a commitment to working with families and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Available Non-Mandatory Opportunities Departmental Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues in the music department to create unique enrichment opportunities for students. Community Engagement: Fully engage in the life of the school by participating in all-school events. Required Qualifications Educational Foundation: Bachelor?s degree in Music, Music Education, or related field is required (BA/BS, BM, BME) Artistic Practice and Musical Proficiency: Must be an actively practicing musician with a deep commitment to ongoing musical performance or accompaniment. Teaching Experience: Significant experience teaching individual lessons and working with an established piano method. Piano Pedagogy: Deep knowledge of technique, skill development, and piano literature specifically suited for young students. Performance Leadership: Proven ability to organize and manage student recitals. Kinder to Early Adolescent Advocacy: A genuine enthusiasm for teaching and understanding young students in the lower school and middle school levels. Instructional Innovation: Proficiency in differentiating instruction, employing best pedagogical practices to reach and inspire students of all skill levels and backgrounds. Collaborative Spirit: A demonstrated ability to work effectively and empathetically with students, families, and colleagues within a diverse school community.
