POSITION PURPOSE: To assist students individually or in small group as assigned by the special education teacher/supervisor POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Education/Experience: High School Diploma or GED Minnesota Paraprofessional Requirement of: 2-Year Associates Degree; OR Passing the State Mandated PARA PRO Test Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to direct and support students in the areas of reading, writing, and math Demonstration of knowledge of computers Ability to physically lift 35 pounds PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide individual or small groups of students, on a regular basis, with the academic support they needs as directed Using lesson plans and instructional strategies developed by a licensed professional, prepare and organize material to assist instruction of students using developmentally and age appropriate strategies, equipment, materials, and technologies to accomplish instructional objectives Maintain an emotionally and physically safe environment for all students by applying caring and effective disciplinary procedures and fostering positive social interaction skills with a wide variety of physical, mental, and behavioral needs. Consider cultural backgrounds and medication effects Utilizes strategies that promote the independence of the learner, including positive reinforcement techniques. Paraprofessional may assist other students when target child does not require immediate assistance Collaborate and communicate with certified teachers and student support staff to recommend and implement the goals and objectives of the students Follow through with modifications and adaptations listed in the student''s IEP Collect data, documenting student behavior and/or academic performance, on a daily basis or as needed, as directed by special education teacher Assist students with tasks they are unable to perform without direct assistance Accompany and monitor students as needed during emergency drills, assemblies, or other non-classroom gatherings Physically assist and control students who have varying disabilities and emotional needs Maintain confidential information as required Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the building principal HUMAN RELATION SKILLS NEEDED: Demonstrate compassion, sensitivity, empathy, and the ability to motivate Understand when leadership is required and take initiative Respect cultural diversity and culture of living Respond to differences of opinion with openness and respect Ability to work as a team member Demonstrates integrity and honesty Inquiries about the position can be directed to Mrs. Bolland at kbolland@verndaleschool.org or (218) 445-5184.
