COMMANDANT OF CADETS POSITION STARTS JULY 1, 2018 Saint Thomas Academy (Military Institute) seeks a Commandant of Cadets beginning with the 2018-2019 school year to lead its development of an independent military leadership program in grades 9-12. Since 1885, Saint Thomas Academy has prepared young men to lead lives of excellence through a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, moral and spiritual formation anchored in the teachings of the Catholic Church, and leadership and personal development through its military program. Saint Thomas Academy&#8217;s military leadership program develops mind, body and spirit of the cadets through 1) Academic Excellence, 2) Character Development, 3) Personal Motivation, 4) Physical Development, and 5) Leadership Development. In collaboration with the leadership of the Academy and under the guidance of the Headmaster, the Commandant develops and establishes the leadership culture for the Corps of Cadets, ensuring a supportive and orderly atmosphere for learning characterized by self-discipline, mutual respect and esprit de corps. The Commandant oversees the military leadership program and reinforces an ethically grounded, balanced, fair system of promotions, incentives, recognition, and awards. A high level of communication and interpersonal skills; impeccable integrity; military bearing and physical fitness; mature judgement; and a passion for the development of young men are required. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES The Commandant has the following primary responsibilities: &#216; Provide leadership for the furtherance of the school&#8217;s independent military program and Corps of Cadets structure, maintaining its tradition of excellence and setting the course for programmatic enhancements and improvements; &#216; Develop, execute and supervise all aspects of leadership development, curriculum, and military discipline in accordance with the Academy&#8217;s regulations and policies, including evaluation and performance management of military instructors; &#216; Serve as a member of the administrative cabinet and advises the Headmaster on issues of leadership, management, military discipline, and integration of the military program into school life; &#216; Assists the headmaster and the administrative cabinet in formulating policies and programs that support the Academy&#8217;s visions and goals; &#216; Assist in the management of student behavior by establishing and maintaining effective military discipline and motivational techniques &#216; Build support and clarify issues of vision or policy regarding the management of a compulsory independent military program to members of the Academy&#8217;s community, including faculty and staff; &#216; Establishes standards and policies, and monitors performance for all aspects of leadership development and an independent military curriculum; &#216; Oversee the ongoing development, implementation, review, and improvement of the program of instruction and curriculum course material, while serving as the primary instructor for senior cadets in ML 4 and ADML 4; &#216; Handles all issues regarding the uniform, dress of cadets and military ceremonies; &#216; Manages the military leadership program effectively and efficiently, including the Quartermaster Store, within the budget established by the administration; &#216; Provides oversight and/or support to the Crack Drill Squad, Rifle Team, Clay Target Trap & Skeet Team, Ranger Team, and the STA Honor Guard; &#216; Attend all Academy events, conferences, fund raisers, athletic events as prescribed; &#216; Serves as a link between the school and the veteran / alumni community; &#216; Promotes the Academy&#8217;s military traditions; and &#216; Develops a positive working relationship with students, parents, coworkers, and alumni. EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS The next Commandant of Cadets must have the following experience and skills: &#216; Retired military field grade officer (any service) &#216; Extensive leadership experience at the platoon, company, and battalion level (or service equivalent) &#216; Bachelor&#8217;s Degree minimum (Master&#8217;s preferred) &#216; Proven teaching experience (ROTC, JROTC or service school experience preferred) &#216; Excellent written and oral communication skills &#216; Exceptional intellectual and analytical capabilities, open-mindedness and flexibility to balance the strong traditions and practices of STA&#8217;s independent military program with the need for innovation and continuous improvement to achieve goals, maintain and further develop a premier independent military program &#216; Proven organizational skills in educational management, including but not limited to, curriculum development, lesson planning, instructional techniques, and assessments. &#216; Theoretical understanding and practical experience involving adolescent males &#216; Knowledge of the functioning and administration of a student-led Corps of Cadets &#216; Strong base of knowledge in leadership theory, philosophies and instruction &#216; Working knowledge in the instruction of military history &#216; Superb knowledge of military protocol, including drill and ceremonies &#216; Willingness to undertake additional school responsibilities, coaching and /or moderating student co-curricular organizations &#216; Experience and demonstrated effectiveness working with individuals from diverse backgrounds PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS The next Commandant of Cadets should demonstrate the following personal characteristics: &#216; Leadership effectiveness shown through decisive behaviors and successful communication &#216; Strong values and ethics that align with the Roman Catholic values and traditions of Saint Thomas Academy &#216; Innovator &#216; Collaborator and relationship builder &#216; Networker &#216; Strong interpersonal skills &#216; Positive role model &#216; Others-oriented &#216; Passion for the development of adolescent males SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS: Interested individuals should submit the following: &#216; Cover letter outlining your interest in the position and Saint Thomas Academy.
