General Definition of Work Performs intermediate professional work providing personalized services to students and families with urban backgrounds; providing information resources to staff, administration and communities about school system expectations for students with an urban background; serving as a liaison for families with urban students and the school system, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Director of Student Services. Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Essential Functions Acts as a student reference and guide to increase awareness of school system and procedures, cultural differences or school expectations. Disseminates information and provides training to staff, students, and families on urban issues; provides on going communication with families and staff. Provides community outreach to students and families. Facilitates communication between staff, administration, students and families with urban students; conducts home visits if necessary. Provides assistance to diverse students to help them understand school systems and processes. Assists management with problem resolution due to cultural differences. Works with school staff to enhance student development. Facilitates the empowerment of parents of diverse students. Provides cultural interpretation to increase communication between school staff and home. Provides orientation to diverse students when they arrive in the district. Provides interpretation or translation services for staff, students and parents. Helps to encourage community involvement from parents of diverse students. Communicates the expectations and policies of the school to ensure success in the classroom. Maintain adequate communication between school staff and parents discussing discipline, transportation issues, conferences etc. Provides assistance to the Principal's Secretary. Monitors student behavior. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of district policies, manuals, programs, processes and procedures; comprehensive knowledge of standard office practices, procedures and equipment; thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; general knowledge of Spanish language methods and procedures; general knowledge of Spanish and urban culturual differences; thorough skill operating standard office equipment, personal computer and applicable hardware and software; thorough skill performing data entry on web-based forms; ability to speak and read Spanish and English accurately and rapidly; ability to create and maintain files, records, reports and databases in a timely and effective manner both electronically and on paper; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written formats; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, teachers, employees and the general public. Education and Experience Associates/Technical degree with coursework in global studies, child development, emotional or behavioral disorders, behavioral management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor's degree preferred. Physical Requirements This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, frequently requires walking and sitting and occasionally requires standing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and exposure to bodily fluids; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Special Requirements Must have the ability to read, write and understand the Spanish language. Experience working in a multi cultural setting and with diverse groups of people preferred. Alternatives to the qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable will also be considered. Valid driver's license in the State of Minnesota.
