Director of Safety & Security
Totino-Grace High School
Totino-Grace High School is seeking a proactive, people-centered professional to serve as its Director of Safety & Security.
This position encompasses the full spectrum of school safety and security, with a strong emphasis on prevention, preparation, relationships, awareness, and trust. Emergency response capability is an important part of the role, while the primary responsibility is to help create an environment in which problems are identified early, risks are reduced before they become incidents, and students and staff view safety as a shared responsibility.
Rooted in Totino-Grace’s Lasallian Catholic mission, the Director will be a highly visible and approachable member of the school community. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with teenagers, educators, administrators, parents, first responders, and outside professionals—and will understand that effective school safety is built through preparedness, relationships, sound judgment, and a strong sense of community.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a safety, risk-management, emergency-management, education, operations, security, or related professional who is ready to take ownership of a comprehensive program and make a meaningful impact.
Schedule & Terms: 12-month salaried position.
Core Philosophy
Totino-Grace is looking for a safety professional who brings a broad perspective to school safety and security, combining prevention, preparedness, relationships, sound practices, and effective response.
The Director will balance five priorities:
Prevention and early identification of concerns
Strong relationships with students and staff
Emergency preparedness and competent response
Practical physical-security measures
A welcoming school environment consistent with Totino-Grace’s mission
The successful candidate will be expected to continually ask not only, “How would we respond to an incident?” but also, “What can we do today to prevent that incident from occurring?”
Key Responsibilities
Build a Culture of Safety and Care
Be a visible, accessible, and trusted presence throughout the school.
Develop meaningful relationships with students, faculty, staff, coaches, administrators, and families.
Encourage students and employees to communicate concerns and contribute to a culture of safety.
Promote situational awareness, personal responsibility, and shared ownership of school safety.
Help ensure that security practices support, rather than undermine, the welcoming culture of the school.
Approach student-related concerns with sound judgment, discretion, empathy, and an understanding of adolescent behavior.
Prevention, Assessment & Planning
Continually assess campus vulnerabilities, practices, patterns, and emerging risks.
Review incidents, near misses, behavioral concerns, visitor practices, traffic patterns, and other available information to identify opportunities to reduce risk.
Participate in behavioral-threat assessment and multidisciplinary problem-solving when appropriate.
Develop practical prevention strategies and proactive risk-reduction measures.
Maintain an ongoing safety improvement plan with identifiable priorities and measurable progress.
Bring emerging issues, opportunities, and recommendations proactively to school leadership.
Emergency Preparedness
Maintain and continually improve the school’s emergency response procedures.
Coordinate drills, exercises, debriefings, and corrective actions.
Prepare the school community for incidents including severe weather, fire, medical emergencies, violence, threats, evacuation, sheltering, and reunification.
Train faculty and staff in their responsibilities during emergencies.
Ensure plans are understandable, realistic, practiced, adaptable, and aligned with the needs of the school community.
Physical Security & Technology
Oversee and evaluate access control, visitor management, surveillance, communication systems, alarms, and other safety technologies.
Work with Facilities and Operations to identify and implement practical physical-security improvements.
Assist with safety considerations associated with construction, renovation, traffic flow, parking, and campus events.
Evaluate technology and security measures based on risk, effectiveness, usability, and the needs of the school community.
Fulfill administrative and safety requirements of our transportation program
Incident Management
Serve as a principal safety resource during significant incidents.
Maintain calm, disciplined, and proportionate decision-making during emergencies.
Know when an incident can be appropriately handled internally, and when to coordinate with police, fire, EMS, mental-health professionals, and other outside resources as circumstances require.
Work effectively with administrators and outside responders while supporting appropriate school leadership and decision-making.
Participate in post-incident reviews and translate lessons learned into ongoing improvements.
Education & Community Engagement
Develop practical safety education for employees and students.
Help faculty and staff recognize warning signs, vulnerabilities, and situations requiring additional attention or support.
Work collaboratively with parents and other stakeholders when safety issues affect the larger school community.
Partner with TG’s Communications team regarding emergency and safety-related messaging.
Coordinate safety planning for athletic contests, performances, ceremonies, Masses, meetings, and other major events.
External Partnerships
Build productive relationships with police, fire, EMS, emergency management, neighboring institutions, and professional safety resources.
Develop relationships before an emergency occurs so that responsibilities and expectations are well understood.
Collaborate with outside agencies and specialists to strengthen the school’s safety capabilities.
Engage specialized expertise when additional knowledge or resources, beyond the Director’s experience, can benefit the school community.
Program Leadership
The Director will have meaningful ownership of Totino-Grace’s safety program.
The Director will have the opportunity to evaluate existing practices and resources, identify priorities, recommend improvements, and continue developing a comprehensive, prevention-oriented safety program.
